In 1957 gibson announced the flying V electric guitar but were only in production in 1958, the unusual futuristic shape of the guitar fascinated people, however the guitar met with little success.
In 1979 gibson also introduced the flying V two, it had a five piece maple and walnut sculptured body, ebony fingerboard with dot inlays, 2 v-shaped pickups, gold plated hardware and were made in natural finishes.
The gibson flying V guitars with korina bodies were introduced in 1982 and were more or less reissues or tributes to the original 1958 flying v's.

Jimi Hendrix often favored the Gibson V. The distinctive flying V and Explorer models were Gibson's first guitars using straight body lines and have a distinctly modern look to them.
Gibson also made changes to the manufacturing process which allowed it to bond multiple pieces of Mahogany together as large pieces of Mahogany were getting scarce.

The Gibson Flying V is a popular electric guitar first released in 1958 by Gibson.
Gibson reissued the guitar in 1967, updating its design with a bigger, more stylish scratchplate, and ditching the original bridge, which had the strings inserted through the back, in favor of the stopbar tail piece more commonly associated with Gibson models.
In 1981, Gibson produced a four-string bass version of the Flying V. Only 375 were produced, most of them fl but a few in alpine white, silverburst, or transparent blue.
