Gideon, then 51, had been convicted of breaking into a Florida pool room and stealing a small amount of money.
At trial, Gideon asked the judge to appoint a lawyer to represent him, but his request was refused - Florida law at the time allowed for free counsel only in capital cases.
Gideon's conviction was overturned and he was freed from jail.
