University of Giessen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The University of Giessen was founded in 1607 as a Lutheran university in the city of Giessen in Hesse-Darmstadt because the all-Hessian Landesuniversität, the nearby University of Marburg (Philipps-Universität Marburg) in Marburg, Hesse-Kassel, founded in 1527, had become Reformed (that is, Calvinist).
Belonging to a very small and poor German state, Giessen was always a minor and poor German university, a "stepping-stone university" where professors had their very first chair but moved on as soon as they could (with the exception of the strong agricultural and veterinary fields).
Next to Liebig, famous Giessen professors included the theologian Adolf von Harnack, the lawyer Rudolf von Jhering, the economist and statistician Etienne Laspeyres, the physicist Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, the gestalt psychologist Kurt Koffka, the philologist and archaeologist Friedrich Gottlieb Welcker, and the orientalist Eberhard Schrader.

Illustrated Giessen Tour; Fac of Med & Univ Med Centre, JLU Giessen
Giessen combines the advantages of a small university town (approximately 80,000 inhabitants) with a picturesque, almost pastorale surrounding and the close proximity to a major international metropolis (Frankfurt), a virtual hub of Europe (approximately 60 km away, driving time by car about three quarters of an hour; excellent rail connections).
Giessen, being primarily a university town (it has the highest per capita rate of students to inhabitants in Germany) has a variety of local pubs, bistros and restaurants (offering a wide spectrum of international cuisines).
Giessen's university has a long and interesting history, not the least of which is the fact that Roentgen, the inventor of the x-ray, spent some time here (incidently he is buried here).

Giessen's materials chemical research is principally in two areas, much of it done in interdisciplinary cooperations with physicists and engineers in the framework of the Materials Science Division of the Barnett Institute.
These research areas are: new ceramic cuprate superconductors with high critical temperatures and high critical currents prepared by new processes described in a series of patents; and plasma surface modification of metals by ion nitriding, especially stainless steels with corrosion-resistant single phase constitution of interest to the chemical industry.
In this research area, supply, demand and pricing patterns of commercial commodities and other types of futures are studied by analytical techniques, using computer programs written by associated staff and students.
