Pinchot rose to national prominence as a conservationist and political progressive under the patronage of President Theodore Roosevelt.
He graduated from Yale University in 1889, where he was a member of Skull and Bones and then studied as a postgraduate at the French National Forestry School for a year.
Pinchot developed a plan by which the forests could be developed by private interests, under set terms, in exchange for a fee.

We have learned that Idaho General Mines (IGMI), out of Spokane, WA, has applied for a lease from the Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service to mine for copper, gold, molybdenum, and silver in the Green River valley below Goat Mountain, which lies just east of the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument.
The BLM and U.S. Forest Service received the mine proposal in late March and are currently contemplating their next steps.
No formal public involvement process under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) has begun, so it is early enough in the process for the public to have a real influence over their decision.
