As a result, the DVD features a variety of puppetry, animation and live action supplied by personal friends of the group, including AJ Schnack, who directed the TMBG documentary Gigantic (A Tale of Two Johns).
While the audio-only release is considered to be They Might Be Giants eleventh studio album, some of the songs make little sense without their visual accompaniment.
For guest vocals on a few tracks, they turned to family: John Flansburgh's wife Robin Goldwasser, and John Linnell's son Henry.

If you're not a fan of the band, or know what the so-called underground was like before punk broke, "Gigantic: A Tale of Two Johns" will baffle you as to the significance of John Flansburg and John Linnell.
The film takes its own sweet time in stating their case about why the two Johns are worthy of a full-length film because director Al Schnack holds back the songs that belong in anybody's notion of an alternative rock canon for far too long.
An absorbing and inspiring portrait of two musicians whose unerring sense of what's right -- both artistically and ethically -- has not just held them in good stead but driven their particular brand of success.

IMDb user comments for Gigantic (A Tale of Two Johns) (2002)
In addition to some terrific archival footage and music-video clips of the Johns, many of their current and former associates are on hand to help tell their story.
The two bandmates -- wiry, floppy-haired singer-keyboardist-accordionist John Linnell and paunchy, bespectacled singer-guitarist John Flansburgh -- relate their entire history from their school days in Lincoln, Massachusetts in the 1970s to their late-'90s film and TV work after they got dropped by the Elektra label.
The band is well-known for writing about subject matter that you don't normally expect to find in pop songs and working in a wide range of musical styles, and this film is often as clever and unpredictable as TMBG themselves.
