A gigaton (or gigatonne) is a metric unit of mass, equal to 1,000,000,000 (1 billion) metric tons, 1,000,000,000,000 (1 trillion) kilograms, or 1 quadrillion grams.
A gigaton is equal to 1,000 megatons, and is from the same family of terms.
An earthquake measuring an 8.0 on the Richter scale releases the equivalent of approximately 1.01 gigatons of TNT; the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake is estimated to have released the equivalent of 100 gigatons of TNT.

 Gigaton - Definition, explanation
A gigaton (or gigatonne) is a Metric Unit of mass, equal to 1,000,000,000 (1 billion) Metric tonss, 1,000,000,000,000 (1 trillion) kilograms, or 1 quadrillion grams.
A gigaton of TNT is more commonly used as a measure of energy equal to that released by 1 billion metric tons of TNT.
Although the gigaton unit does not appear to be in common enough usage to warrant an official abbreviation, Gt would be the logical choice.

Reason Magazine - Low Carbon Future?
To reduce projected emissions by one gigaton per year in 2050, the world would have to build 1400 new one-gigawatt combined cycle gas turbine power plants to replace coal-fired plants.
To avoid another gigaton of carbon emissions by 2050, would require building 700 one-gigawatt nuclear power plants rather than the equivalent conventional coal facilities.
Finally, the WBCSD study included a possible fuel mix for the world in 2050 in which the world's power supply is doubled and emits nine gigatons of carbon per year.

The Wedge Approach to Climate Change
At 1 gigaton apiece, each technology wedge still represents a huge investment, but they are nonetheless conceivable.
Introduce carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) at 800 GW worth of coal plants or 1,600 GW worth of natural gas plants (U.S. coal plants have an average capacity of roughly 1 GW).
7 gigatons of reductions are needed to achieve stabilization, so 7 of 15 wedges would, in theory, reach that goal.

Hispanic American Center for Economic Research - Our Low Carbon Future?
Humanity currently emits about 7 gigatons of carbon (excluding traditional biomass burning of 1gigaton) annually in the form of carbon dioxide.
The remaining 2 gigatons can be avoided by a combination of increased energy efficiency in appliances and buildings, more mass transit, and some societal changes.
That would mean that instead of emitting 7 gigatons of carbon in 2050 under the WBCSD scenario, the world would emit only 2.8 gigatons of carbon annually.

One gigaton is the equivalent of one petagram, and one gigaton of water is the equivalent of about one cubic kilometer.
The major cause, by far, for the rise in concentrations of carbon dioxide in the earth's atmosphere is the burning of fossil fuels.
Figure 9 shows the fossil fuel emissions in gigatons per year as a function of time.

As if Hiroshima and Nagasaki were not horrible enough reminders of what damage even a kiloton sized nuclear device can do, the US military has developed the technology to create a gigaton sized (the resulting explosion being equivalent to at least one billion tons of TNT) nuclear bomb.
This means that one of these bombs would be at least 7000 times as powerful as the first nuclear device dropped in anger.
The reason why we need to look into the development of Gigaton Bombs is simple: Because there is more to learn, and our survival depends on it.

When do you Abort? - HERO GAMES Discussion Boards
P.S. If you want to know more about how my GM adjudicated the situation, after we had seen a few of Gigaton's blasts, the GM gave us a Perception roll to see if we could determine what kind of blast was coming at us before making the Abort decision.
If Gigaton is using an AOE attack it is reasonable to assume that he is targeting your character's hex (DCV 3) instead of your character directly.
Since CKC doesn't describe Gigaton's SFX, the GM could have said all of his various blasts look alike, so there's no way to tell which one he's firing.

To do that, carbon emissions would have to be reduced ultimately by seven gigatons a year.
A gigaton, or a billion tons, is even bigger than it sounds.
Eliminating just one, argues Browne, would mean building 700 nuclear stations to replace fossil-fuel-burning power plants, or increasing the use of solar power by a factor of 700, or stopping all deforestation and doubling present efforts at reforestation.
