However such was the Fund’s confidence in the Gigha community that it was able to offer the community a grant of £3.525 million to complete the community buyout.
However, a condition of the grant was for the Isle of Gigha Heritage Trust to pay back £1 million of the grant by March 2004 which the island successfully achieved.
Most people on Gigha rent their homes from the Trust and already we have engaged a design team and put in place the finances for a £3 million Housing Improvement Programme of all Trust housing.

The name Gigha may mean God's Island although Norse invaders probably knew it as the 'isle of the good harbours' because although the island is less than seven miles long, it has an astonishing twenty- five miles of coastline and a great number of small, sheltered bays.
A few years ago, Gigha was the subject of the largest community buyout in British history, and as well as writing about the complex history of the islanders, the author examines the relationship between a contemporary island community and its own rich past.
This is the story of the people of Gigha, based on an examination of changing settlement patterns on the island from prehistoric times to the present day.

One of the most satisfactory aspects of the successful community buy-out of the island of Gigha has been the late conversion of its former proprietor to the philosophy of the communal ownership of land.
Derek Holt was persuaded to accept the amount offered by the community for Gigha, and to hand the island over to its residents - albeit with a thankfully brief lecture about their new responsibilities as landowners and "business people".
In short, Gigha was too expensive and - even once the majority of the population supported it and the money had been raised - it almost fell through.
