LUIGI "GIGI" VILLORESI died on August 24 at the age of 88.
Gigi won the 1500cc category in the Italian national championship in 1938 and 1939 and won the 1939 and 1940 Targo Florio races.
Villoresi was buried in the village of Albareto, near Modena.

Villoresi, or "Gigi" as he was called by his friends competed in not less that 33 Grand Prix, from 1950 - 1956.
Gigi can be seen on the third row, driving the # 34 Maserati 250F which he shared with Swede Joakim Bonnier.
Villoresi died in 1997, aged 88 and personally signed this photo shortly before his death (the print of the photo is dated 1996).

Enzo refused, and for a long time Villoresi did not have a high esteem for the man. A couple of months after "Gigi" was approached by a young racer wanting to buy an Alfa Romeo.
Villoresi on his part completely overcame his gripe against Ferrari after having taken up the invitation to race Ferraris in Brussels and Luxembourg.
From that moment on, Villoresi and Ascari teamed up with Ferrari and Lampredi and raced their cars for the next five years, with striking results.

Most of the efforts were put into the other team cars, Lurani's 1500 not being taken too seriously, so he had to start the race on what tyres were left over, and pulling the wrong axle ratio and so on.
He drove round disconsolately in 6th place until he was due to stop and refuel, and then feeling a bit fed up with it all he handed the car over to Luigi Villoresi, whose six-cylinder had blown up.
Villoresi stormed back into the race and drove really hard, working his way up to third place by the finish, being beaten by Lord Howe (ERA) and Taruffi (Maserati).

The crew composed of American Jack Croul and Massimo Raimondi attempted a winning assault in the wonderful 340 America Coupé Vignale, in which Italian Gigi Villoresi triumphed at the 1951 Mille Miglia.
The 340 MM Spider in which Gigi Villoresi and Pasquale Cassini ran the 1953 Mille Miglia was at the start with Roberto Crippa at the wheel.
Other jewels that made the 2005 Mille Miglia more precious were two Ferrari 166 MM Barchettas, bodied by Carrozzeria Touring, one painted red and the other one in a gorgeous ivory with tobacco leather seats.
