Prime Minister of Turkey Creek knew old ways - Obituaries - smh.com.au
THE passing of the Gija artist and elder Hector Jandany has affected many people deeply, from his life-long mates at Warmun (Turkey Creek) in the Kimberley region of Western Australia to the many gardyia, or white people, who have been touched by his wit and the beauty of his paintings.
Jandany was one of the few surviving members of the first generation of ochre artists and storytellers who began painting on the banks of Turkey Creek in the mid-1970s and whose influence can be seen in the work of many Gija artists painting today in the Kimberley.
The story of the Kimberley for the Gija in his lifetime was one of desperate struggle and dispossession but his natural inclination was to see good and to use the teaching of traditional stories and language to tryto keep young family members on track.
