 Encyclopedia: Gil Amelio
Gil brought Apple's finances under some limited control, turning Apple from "a disastrously-managed company into just a poorly-managed one," according to an outside consultant who has had a look at Cupertino's holy of holies.
Gil did what had to be done, yet somehow didn't give Apple any of his own personality, and that's why he failed.
Gil Amelio was irrelevant and his departure was determined simply by the fact that it was on a given hour that the Apple board of directors finally noticed this fact.

Amelio also fills in bits of history that cast Apple's recent spate of good news in a different light.
For example, Amelio accuses this reviewer of trying, with a piece written before last year's annual meeting, to foment shareholder revolt by pointing out that the five-year, $12 million-plus pay package he had landed the year before was still subject to shareholder approval.
But just because Apple's slow-moving board was forced in a pinch to throw a world-class deal to Amelio, one of its own members, doesn't mean shareholders shouldn't exercise their right to agree or disagree.

Apple could indeed reduce prices, so let's focus on the iMac as a case study to see what Apple would need to do to keep, say a 10% margin instead of perhaps a 15% - 20% margin (Note: I start with these margins because this is where Analysts believe them to be).
The problem with the gross margin scenarios you give is that you make the wrong assumptions in the first place.
This can only be achieved by good quality products and limiting availability of artificially made cheap products to a period of time or a specific group of people and limiting the number of machines an eligible buyer can purchase.
