As I explain to Gil and Tom that it was John Duddy, not John Gotti, either the late senior or junior, I try very hard to imagine Gil Clancy’s thoughts while he was talking on the cell phone with John Duddy who he thought was John Gotti.
It is just before the main event that a freshly showered Duddy returns to the arena and having heard that Gil Clancy was there, asks for an introduction.
Remembering the respect and admiration Duddy and Clancy shared for each other, and this being the age of electronic wizardry, a sudden inspiration was born.

Sicilian Culture: The People: Johnny LoBianco (Obituary)
Gil Clancy, Buchanan's trainer, maintained afterward that Duran had leveled Buchanan with a blow from his knee that lifted Buchanan's protective cup.
Buchanan, who was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame last year, was still angry over his loss to Duran.
But Buchanan was far behind on all three cards, and as Red Smith put it in his Sports of The Times column, "LoBianco had no choice but to declare Duran the winner" despite a possible low blow because on the American boxing scene "anything short of pulling a knife is regarded indulgently."

'Ring of Fire' Connects With True Story of A Fatal Blow
More likely, the 24-year-old Griffith, a wary pro trying to regain the title he had lost to Paret six months earlier, saw the opening and, as he had been instructed to by his manager Gil Clancy, stepped in and took legitimate athletic advantage against a consenting professional opponent.
Paret slipped to the canvas like a Titanic going stern-first into the dark water, sliding toward oblivion, seemingly in slow-mo, shocking by his total animal unconsciousness a nationwide TV audience.
The second is that Paret had been savagely beaten by Gene Fullmer three months earlier and almost certainly carried brain damage into the ring with him.
