Gil Ayres is sometimes said to have been the son of a man from the town of Alegrete and a lady named Maria Trabuca, a relative of the constable, but the author finds no source for this supposition.
Gil's other children seem to have been Leonore Moniz, "the younger", who is specifically described as being the daughter of Gil Ayres, the Constable's secretary, and a Martin Gil, who appears to have been the ancestor of Columbus' wife.

The discovery of a passable route around Cape Bojador, in 1434, by the Portuguese mariner Gil Eanes was considered a major breakthrough for European traders en route to Africa and later to India.
Eanes had made a previous attempt in 1433 which resulted in failure, but tried again under orders of Prince Henry the Navigator, who first sent in him 1424.
The disappearance of numerous European vessels that made prior attempts, despite its violent seas, to round the Cape led some to suggest the presence of sea monsters.

Here a symbiosis with the coastal African peoples emerged; the coastal Africans profited from selling the goods they acquired from the Portuguese to the Africans of the interior, in return supplying the Portuguese with the prodocts of Africa the latter demanded.

In the end, Gil's friendship with Mbemba and Mbemba's curiosity about the European world begin the cycle of tragedy that will destroy Gil, his son Kimpasi (who becomes a Portuguese-educated Catholic priest), and everything Gil cherishes about the land that has become his home.
