Heron was dropped by Arista in 1985, and quit recording, though he continued to tour.
The first track on the album was a poem recognizing Heron as a founding father of rap and a plea for the new rappers to speak for change rather than perpetuate the current social situation, to be more articulate and artistic.
Since then in 2002, Heron recorded with and appeared on the Blackalicious album, "Blazing Arrow." One of the most important progenitors of rap music, Heron became a mouthpiece for the Black Person in America during the Seventies and Eighties.

Gil Scott-Heron reinforces his position as Godfather of Rap on Free Will, an introspective and soulful album roughly the length of a demo tape.
Police brutality, the consequences of violence and self-exploration on this 2001 re-issue make excellent arguments for his place in the canon of spoken word -- not only because of his lyrical content and profundity, but because he was a master of delivery, even in his idealistic twenties.
Heron's voice is at its raspy best throughout, especially on "Ain't No New Thing", an amusing look at the appropriation of fl music and culture by the American mainstream.

Important to Gil Scott-Heron's success on his first two albums for Arista (First Minute of a New Day and From Africa to South Carolina) was the influence of keyboardist and collaborator Brian Jackson, co-billed on both LPs and the de facto leader of Scott-Heron's Midnight Band.
Jackson left by 1978, though, leaving the musical direction of Scott-Heron's career in the capable hands of producer Malcolm Cecil, a veteran producer who had midwifed the funkier direction of the Isley Brothers and Stevie Wonder earlier in the decade.

On a rainy Sunday night last fall, Detective William Velasquez and Michael Pardo, two undercover cops from the Northern Manhattan Initiative, a special NYPD narcotics task force, were making 'observation arrests' from an unmarked, green Ford Windstar van.
Kitson, in a previous hearing, argued that spotting no exchange of money, only "a little handshake thing," could not objectively be called a drug deal, and seeing someone pocket an object as innocuous as tinfoil shouldn't always mean cocaine.
She also described coming home to find Scott-Heron "buck naked with a bunch of $2 crack whores," and fits of paranoia, such as when he thought the lightbulbs in the apartment were spying on him and took them all out.

One of the most important progenitors of rap music, Gil Scott-Heron's aggressive, no-nonsense street poetry inspired a legion of intelligent rappers while his engaging songwriting skills placed him square in the R&B charts later in his career, backed by increasingly contemporary production courtesy of Malcolm Cecil and Nile Rodgers (of Chic).
Born in Chicago but transplanted to Tennessee for his early years, Scott-Heron spent most of his high-school years in the Bronx, where he learned firsthand many of the experiences which later made up his songwriting material.
In a touching bit of irony which he himself was quick to joke about, Gil Scott-Heron was born on April Fool's Day 1949 in Chicago, the son of a Jamaican professional soccer player (who spent time playing for Glasgow Celtic) and a college-graduate mother who worked as a librarian.
