 | | Legendary sportscaster Gil Santos of WBZ-AM was on hand as UMass Boston concluded Camp Shriver with an awards ceremony that recognized the accomplishments of a remarkable collection of boys and girls – both those with and without special needs – who spent two weeks on campus playing sports and making friends. |
 | | Santos, a veteran sports journalist and the play-by-play announcer for the New England Patriots, hosted the closing ceremony that marked the end of this unique summer camp experience that offered swimming, basketball, soccer, and many other camp activities to 65 children, ages 9-12, from Boston, Cambridge and Brockton. |
 | | In 1962, Eunice Kennedy Shriver invited 35 children with disabilities to her Maryland home to explore their capabilities in a variety of sports and physical activities and participate in the first ever “Camp Shriver.” The camp became an annual event and was the precursor to the development of Special Olympics. |
