The Mexican wolf, now extinct in the state, is being considered for reintroduction in the Gila Wilderness Area in southwestern New Mexico.
In the colder waters of high mountain streams and lakes are a variety of trout, including rainbow, lake, brook, cutthroat, and brown, and kokanee salmon.
By the mid-1990s some 26 species of fish (including the Gila trout), 21 species of amphibians and reptiles (including several species of rattlesnake and the Gila monster), 32 birds (including the bald eagle and Mexican spotted owl), and 15 mammals were listed as threatened or endangered.

A helicopter delivered 1,500 fingerling Gila trout to White Creek, a tributary to the West Fork Gila River, deep in the wilderness after meeting NEPA compliance.
Prior to this third stocking, biologists examined the stream populations and determined that adults and naturally spawned young Gila trout were present — a strong indication that previous stockings succeeded.
The Gila trout has been closed to fishing since 1956; this recent effort is part of a larger plan to move the trout from 'endangered' to 'threatened,' and eventual removal from the endangered species list.

Until 1988, steelhead (the anadromous form of rainbow trout) was classified in the genus Salmo along with Atlantic salmon, brown trout, and several western trout species.
The generic names of the golden, Mexican golden, Gila, and Apache trouts were also changed to Oncorhynchus.
Since all of these western trouts including steelhead are biologically capable of repeat spawning and do not die after spawning, it has been suggested this group be called the Pacific trout.

 Moving to New Mexico
The San Juan and Gila rivers flow westward to join the Colorado River.
Most of the state is drained by dry washes, called arroyos, which after summer thunderstorms can carry large amounts of water, causing flash floods.
The Gila National Forest contains vast areas of rugged mountain ranges, little affected by civilization, and includes the Gila Wilderness Area.
