 Gilbert Adair Summary
Gilbert Adair is probably best known for his writing in several national magazines and newspapers (including The Guardian, The Telegraph, and Esquire), especially the weekly "Scrutiny" column he wrote for the The Sunday Times between 1992 and 1996.
Critics praised the novel but accused Adair of being insufficiently sympathetic to his characters and of leaving the reader with a cruel "farce" rather than a "tragicomedy." This criticism overlooks the subtle treatment of narration in the novel, which is written in the clear but pompous prose style of the narrator.
Gilbert Adair (born December 29, 1944) is an author, film critic, and journalist who won the Scott Moncrieff Translation Prize for his book A Void which is a translation of the French book La Disparition by Georges Perec.

Gilbert Adair previously won the Scott-Moncrieff prize for his extraordinary translation of the late Georges Perec's A Void--a novel composed without the letter "e"-- and some of that author's wit, allusiveness and self- conscious artistry find their way into Adair's new book, transmuted into something altogether more sinister.
Adair's conceit is to write a book that consists of nothing but dialogue, and whilst this gets the reader's imagination working it also feels like reading a play script at times.
Gilbert Adair is an underrated master novelist of England. He gets better with his each new economi- cally written quality novels."A Closed Book" is an exciting and satisfying book.

The Real Tadzio - Gilbert Adair
Adair also writes about Moes' friend Jan Fudakowski, the inspiration for Jaschiu, and tells of the after-effects of their odd little fame.
Adair looks at the history of Death in Venice: the novella, the film, the inspiration it has been (including to Adair the novelist, who has written several books that borrow from Mann's work), and the place it holds as a "paradigmatic master-text of homosexual eroticism".
Adair stumbles around a bit in shifting focus so much, but he presents a great deal of material and he presents most of it well.

Love and Death on Long Island - Gilbert Adair
Gilbert Adair's elegant little novella tells the story of a renowned English author, born in the 1930's, who walks into the wrong movie and finds himself confronted both by a modern world that has passed him by and a figure on the screen that will first haunt and then obsess him.
Comfortably off (Giles inherited a nice little fortune) and relatively alone in the world (widowed, the only person he is in regular contact with is his housekeeper) Giles lives his dull routine until the day when he is caught in front of a cinema in a downpour.
Adair carefully builds up the obsession, as Giles is in turn lead to furtive purchases of American teen magazines and a video recorder in order to learn more about his newfound idol, finally even travelling to Long Island to seek Bostock out in person.

So Adair was probably right to let his novel slip out of print and redo it entirely when he had the chance of a quick quid.
Having just picked up Gilbert Adair's latest novel, Buenas Noches Buenos Aires, I see from Amazon that there are a few others of his I haven't mentioned, particularly his sequel to Through the Looking Glass (Alice through the Needle's Eye) and Peter Pan (Peter Pan and the Only Children).
Adair's new novel The Act of Roger Murgatroyd is 'out now' as they say: I saw it in Smith's for £8.99 in hardback.

British writer Adair has an imposing record with three novels, books on film such as Hollywood's Vietnam and Flickers and one of the more convincing acts of translation with his version of Georges Perec's "e"-less A Void.
Adair tries, ultimately unsuccessfully, to give his book the kind of sharp, witty analyses of popular foibles found in Roland Barthes's Mythologies.
Moreover, even for the London Times in its current sadly decomposed state, the comments here are often trite, such as in "On melody," when he wonders why the tune of Gershwin's "Summertime" "took so long" to be discovered by a composer, any composer at all.

Gilbert Adair's novels include ‘The Holy Innocents', ‘Love and Death on Long Island', ‘The Death of the Author', ‘The Key of the Tower' and ‘A Closed Book'.
It is possible, I suppose, to miss the cleverness of Gilbert Adair's Buenas Noches Buenos Aires, and dismiss it as crude, banal and filled with unsympathetic characters.
Had Mr Adair published his novel 15 years ago, it may have been of interest but unfortunately today, what the author presents as "a true story" in page 1 is completely devoid of originality.

Adair may be a competent writer, but a reading of _Death in Venice_, by Thomas Mann, will reveal that he owes a great deal to Herr Mann.
Adair's that he -- aside from not crediting Mann -- does not credit the reader with the education or the wit to tell a pale imitation from the real thing.
Adair proves himself as a wordsmith of the highest order, possessing an encyclopedic knowledge of the english language.

Giles De'Ath is a widowed British novelist so obstinately old-fashioned that he speaks of the "current fad for videotape recorders." Caught in the rain one afternoon, he ducks into a cinema and inadvertently finds himself watching something called Hotpants College II, where he first gazes upon an American heartthrob named Ronnie Bostock.
Gilbert Adair's narrative--it might be more accurate to call it a novella instead of a novel--is a precise depiction of romantic obsession and frustration.
Narrated by De'Ath, it is thus somewhat more internally driven than the excellent 1998 film adaptation starring John Hurt and Jason Priestley.

This is a fine bit of history, well presented with accompanying photographs of "Tadzio", his friends, his family, and his disappearance into obscurity while his impetus for Thomas Mann's novella lives on.
Adair also examines the Visconti film and the Britten opera and manages to tie a century's worth of information into a short, eminently readable book.
This is a must read for everyone who has fallen in love with this famous story.
