Bettman's public life was a continuation of a tradition established by his father, Gilbert Bettman Sr., a Cincinnati City Council member, state attorney general and justice on the Ohio Supreme Court.
Instead Bettman found himself slogging through the Philippines, then served as a forward observer in the battle for control of Okinawa, directing artillery fire onto the ridge he and the Japanese army were sharing.
Attacked for overstepping his authority, Bettman issued a letter that outlined the legal framework for his actions, and said that as a citizen he felt he could not sit idly by.

Judge Gilbert Bettman ruled in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court that prosecutors did not have enough evidence to support the charges against Steven O'Banion.
Bettman left intact two felonious-assault charges, but reduced a third charge to misdemeanor assault and dismissed a fourth entirely.
O'Banion, who was arrested Sept. 3 for disorderly conduct and jaywalking, testified that sheriffs physically abused him in jail, causing him to bleed from his mouth and nose.
