LensWork Magazine Forum: Steven Gilbert's article in LW#42
Gilbert sets Lewis Baltz up as emblematic of what is going wrong with photography& direction and then broadens his stance that Baltz is a product of the so-called 'counterculture' of the late 1960s, and it is this nominal movement that is the genesis of the problem.
Gilbert is railing against Baltz or the fact that some portion of the art establishment, who crown those who will get recognition and money, embrace Baltz and therefore legitimize his images as high art.
His images of debris and dirt piles serve the point of illustrating the sad fate of some part of modern life and that part is perhaps a continuation of the so-called culture that the so-called counterculture was countering, i.e., the pursuit of modernity without regard to the consequences to people or the environment.

Compare Prices and Read Reviews on Chesterton, Gilbert Keith at Epinions.com
As C. Lewis, who like me revered GKC, noted, Chesterton's wit and wordplay almost mask, but in the end merely gild and enhance, his strong ethical and logical talent: Lewis likens it to the glitter of a duelist's sword, which is not glittering merely for show.
Always excepting his indefensible sin of Anti-Semitism and general bigotry (and a sin it remains regardless of how much his contemporaries shared it), GKC was in all other regards one of the shining lights of his England.
Born to a suburban London, middle class, conventionally Anglican family, GK Chesterton became the most famous Roman convert since John Henry Cardinal Newman, a brilliant journalist, beloved essayist, noted ethicist, biographer, philosopher, lay theologian, poet, and creator of the immortal priestly sleuth, Father Brown.

 EducationGuardian.co.uk Humanities Obituary: David Lewis
Lewis was astoundingly modest and unpompous for a successful philosopher, always ready to respond to criticism, and unfailingly generous to students.
Lewis is most celebrated for his "modal realism", a theory which argues that possible worlds are not just a concept for explaining possibility and necessity, but as real as our own universe.
Lewis expressed his esoteric ideas in brisk, sturdy, lucid prose, whether on paper or orally, but he was famously incapable of small talk.
