  Gilbert Wakefield - LoveToKnow 1911
GILBERT WAKEFIELD (1756-1801), English classical scholar and politician, was born at Nottingham on the 22nd of February 1756.
His light-hearted criticism of Porson's edition of the Hecuba was avenged by the latter's famous toast: "Gilbert Wakefield; what's Hecuba to him or he to Hecuba ?" About this time Wakefield, who hated Pitt and condemned war as utterly unchristian, abandoned literature for political and religious controversy.
A considerable sum of money was subscribed by the public, sufficient to provide for his family upon his death, which took place on the 9th of September 1801.

"Remarks on Mr. Gilbert Wakefield's Enquiry Into the Expediency and Propriety of Public or Social Worship." (1773)
Wakefield has produced as an instance of an incident which might have given rise to public prayer, and which was suffered to pass without it -- in the account of this very miracle there is a direct precedent for the practice in question; for, looking up to heaven, "he blessed" before he brake the bread.
Wakefield seems to admit, that after their return from Babylonish captivity, when their hearts were purified by adversity and more attached to their religion, they had regular and stated worship in their synagogues, consisting of forms of prayer, reading the Scriptures, and expounding.
Wakefield, by considering public worship as a practice to be adapted to the exigencies of the times, evidently abandons the textual ground, in which narrow path he seemed hitherto to have trod with such scrupulous precaution, and places it on the broader footing of utility.

William Hazlitt (1778-1830), Chapter THREE -- "The Times -- 1791-95."
Wakefield's appointment came with the setting up of the collage in 1790 and he only taught there for that first year; so was not there when the young Hazlitt arrived in 1793.
Wakefield "was opposed to slave trade, field sports, war and public worship, and was a critic of civil and ecclesiastical government."9 Another person of historical note and who the young Hazlitt most definitely met, was Joseph Priestley.
It was in 1790 that Wakefield "was appointed professor of classics at the newly-founded Unitarian college at Hackney, but his proposed reforms and his objection to religious observances led to unpleasantness and to his resignation in the following year."10 Wakefield, leaving Hackney, turned to being a full time critic.

This Hannah Gilbert, Mrs Wakefield, may be the one, presumably a widow, who is recorded in the AIS early census reference (1820) in St Lawrence county as living in Parishville, when she was, presumably, the head of the Wakefield household there.
It may be that Gilbert, Samuel, or Samuel Gilbert Wakefield was not born until the Wakefield family's arrival in NY (thus providing for a reason for his non-appearance among the extracted VT vital records contained in the IGI which furnished most of the foregoing details about the family of Rufus and Hannah).
This, however, would entail her husband Gilbert Wakefield's death and her remarriage to Fox before 1870 (the death of Wakefield was already notionally placed before 1880 anyway, due to the 1880 census data referring to her as Mary C. Hancock, widow).

Gilbert Wakefield (b.1793 VT) in QC & NY
It seems likely that Gilbert Wakefield, met her during her time in Vermont or that he too may have sojourned in that corner of Quebec which served as a second home to so many 'late Loyalist' and land-seeking Americans from Vermont and nearby New England.
To reinforce this supposition, the age of the widow Hancock jibes with that of Mary, wife of Gilbert Wakefield given in 1850, i.e.
It may be that their mothers were both daughters of Gilbert Wakefield), and, when the epidemic struck, was cared for by the neighbouring Wakefield family (presumably his uncle Alvah Wakefield born 1849) til the danger passed.

The fact that Gilbert Gray was mentioned as a son in the will of William Gray of Springfield, the fact Gilbert was of Springfield in 1817, The fact that Gilbert's wife was named Love, The fact that John Sprague witnessed a deed for Gilbert Gray at Grand Manan.
The fact that both the Grand Manan and Springfield Gilbert Grays had the middle initial L. all solidify  the contention  that the Grand Manan and Springfield Gilbert L. Grays were one in the same and that Love Gray was a daughter of John Sprague.
