Whichever answer you opt for, the fact is that Simoni was a bitterly disappointed man in Milan last Sunday, and will want to re-assert his supremacy within his team and within cycling by leading the climbing challenge in the Tour.
And even though Simoni tried to make it look like his attacks in the last three mountain stages were an effort to take second place away from Serguei Honchar, and that he was not attacking his teamate and race-leader - I believe by then, that Simoni just did not have it any more.
To have a Simoni in-form and raring to challenge Armstrong is simply another twist to what I think is becoming the most competitive Tour de France in years, what with the news that Jan Ullrich is coming back to his best in the Deutschland Tour...
