Gilgandra is a smallish country town of 3000 people on the Castlereagh River in NSW's central west.
Gilgandra is a service centre to a mixed farming area focused principally on cropping, sheep and cattle, although pigs, poultry, aquaculture, ostriches, emus, deer, olives, buffaloes and a eucalypt plantation all contribute to the local economy.
After the war Gilgandra was awarded £1200 by St Ambrose Parish of Bournemouth in England as it was considered to have made the greatest war effort of all the towns in the British Empire.

The march left Gilgandra on 10 October 1915 and by the time they reached Sydney on 12 November their 'Coo-ee' bush call had rallied about 300 men.
Gilgandra rediscovered the Coo-ee March in 1987 when a re-enactment march was organised.
There were no casualties and the twenty-two who left Gilgandra were still marching three weeks later when they arrived footsore and rain-sodden in Sydney.

 Tornado at Bearbung near Gilgandra: Sunday 29th September 1996
In a previous article, readers may recall the day (29th September 1996) when three tornadoes were reported in NSW.
One of the supercells spawned a tornado at Bearbung, near Gilgandra in central northern New South Wales.
Chris Cooke, now a storm spotter with the Bureau of Meteorology, watched as the tornado touched down at around 1:30pm and approached near his family property.
