Gill Nets, Gill Netting - Sterling Net and Twine Co. Marine Division
Gill Nets are the most efficient method of catching a specific species of fish at a specific time of the species growth cycle.
The gill net is an extremely light thread, and slides under the fish's gills when it attempts to back out, effectively trapping it until removed.
Gill netting can be monofilament to not be seen in clear waters, or it can be multifilament which tends to match water color (sometimes these nets are specifically dyed).

Currently, gill net fishermen also are required by DLNR to remove their nets every four hours and to monitor the nets every two hours.

 Gill Nets
Called drift nets because fishing boats leave them to drift in the ocean to catch more fish more easily, they are also known as gill nets because fish are caught and trapped by their gills.
The nets are often put into the sea at night, where they drift with the current, catching and killing anything that gets in their way, like huge underwater spiders' webs.
During fishing operations huge pieces of net often break away and continue killing, until eventually it is believed the nets sink with the weight of the dead fish, dolphins, whales, turtles and other creatures that Japanese fishing boats lose.

Native-style rules urged for gill net, fish limits
KAHULUI - Instead of a ban on gill nets implemented by the state, Maui fishermen called for a return to a method similar to what Native Hawaiians practiced in ancient times to regulate the use of the sea and keep the supply of fish sustainable.
The proposed statewide ban on gill nets (or lay nets) was met with mixed approval, at best, from a restless throng that included not only fishermen, but other ocean users and environmentalists, as well.
Ten statewide public meetings were held in 2002 on an initial proposal to tighten the rules on gill nets, including recommendations to have every net registered and to limit use to daytime hours.

Over the last 20 years we have worked successfully to remove the nets from most of the central coast’s shallow waters, but as this meeting demonstrates, the work is not yet through and critical problem areas still remain.
This is an area with the weakest gill net protections, only out to 30 fathoms, of any other part of the coast where existing closures are in place.
Now the question must be asked, “Why are gill nets still allowed off the coast of central California?” They are already banned in all state waters in southern California in order to protect sport fisheries and marine life.

In the July 11 ruling, the court agreed with DFG that the use of the nets was directly impairing the recovery of the threatened southern sea otter, which is a state protected species and also listed as threatened on the federal Endangered Species List.
The court, however, did not find that the use of these nets resulted in a level of mortality that actually threatened the "viability" of the overall common murre population, which was a required standard.
In addition to protecting sea otters and common murres, the gill net closure benefits other marine life such as harbor porpoises, sea lions, elephant seals, and cormorants that inhabit California's nearshore ocean environment, and are also subject to entanglement by the nets.
