Ian Gillan - Biography - AOL Music
Ian Gillan was one of the foremost vocalists of the heavy metal style of rock that emerged in the 1970s, earning his greatest renown as a member of Deep Purple, though he also led bands named after himself.
All of that recording, along with virtually uninterrupted worldwide touring, took its toll on Gillan, who was hospitalized for exhaustion in October 1971 and who first voiced an intention to leave the band in August 1972.
Gillan's next solo album, Naked Thunder, was briefly in the British charts in July 1990.

Gillan became very exhausted doing all those recordings and touring all over the world.
Gillan finally told Deep Purple around October of 1972 that he was leaving, but said that he would stay until the tour dates were finished.
Gillan wanted to have a band named after him and wanted to record all of his songs, so he bought his own recording studio and signed a solo deal with Oyster Records.

The Gillans of Canada and the Geelans of Ireland and Australia are one family with common ancestry.
Although there seems to be little doubt that the Gillans and Geelans, etc. have deep roots in the auld sod of Ireland, it is known that Gillans were, and still are, inhabitants of the Isle of Mull and of part of the mainland of Scotland.
Gillan ancestors are said to have been soldiers in the service of the above mentioned aristocrats either before or during the Reformation and may have received their first lands in Cloonageeher or thereabout in a soldier settlement deal, since much of that area, as well as that of Leitrim, was settled in this way.

The GILLAN Japanese album captured the band at the very moment of their inception, and remains one of their best recordings.
The new album was promised for September 1978, but because of the interest the band had generated in Japan with their two earlier IGB live albums, it was decided to issue the LP there first.
The GILLAN album was now seen as history and all thought of putting it out was dropped.

 Gillan History
Gillan avoided heavy metal stereotyping by hamming it up for the cameras, with John McCoy bouncing around like an enormous bald headed road drill, Bernie Torme, a punk Hendrix pirate complete with eyepatch, Colin Towns in wraparound shades and op-art fashions, and Mick Underwood, a tetchy uncle in mirror sunglasses.
At their best, the Gillan band's music is some of the very strongest and most imaginative of any of the Purple split bands, and a major reappraisal is long overdue.
The only 1978-82-era Gillan material officially released on video is a mime to 'Living For The City' from BBC TV's Top Of The Pops, which was included in the 1980s VHS compilation: 'Top Of The Pops' on BBC Video.
