Violonist Gilles Apap’s first adventure on the east bank of the River Ganges has just been released on DVD by Idéale Audience International in a lavish digipack edition comprising the « Renegade Fiddler » documentary, a two-hour recital in Benares and several video extras.
Born in Algeria, Gilles Apap was raised in Nice where he studied the violin with André Robert, then later at the Conservatoire de Musique de Nice with Gustave Gaglio and at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Lyon with Veda Reynolds.
Apap also performs on three recordings on the Sony Classical label featuring his band, Gilles Apap and the Transylvanian Mountain Boys.

Gilles Apap was born in Algeria to French parents in 1963 and studied at the Curtis Institute of Music after beginning his training in France.
Apap's first traditional classical recording for Sony Classical, a disc of the Bartók violin sonatas with pianist Viktoria Postnikova, was be released in the spring of 1997.
Apap and The Transylvanian Mountain Boys will also be heard in a second Sony Classical release, which is to include the same mix of classical and traditional music -- works by Stravinsky, Bloch, Johann Strauss II, Prokofiev, Kreisler, jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt -- that appears in their debut recording.

Gilles Apap studied music at the Nice and Lyon conservatories in France, and in 1985 after being awarded the first prize in the contemporary music category at the Yehudi Menuhin Competition, he was invited by Menuhin to perform at a concert in Berlin in 1989.
Menuhin described Apap as representing the direction in which music should evolve: on the one hand respect for the precious classical works, on the other hand, the discovery of contemporary (popular) music and its creative element.

Apaps talent was recognized by Menuhin in 1985 when he brought himself to the attention of the great pedagogue by winning the Contemporary Music Prize at the prestigious International Menuhin Competition.

I have only heard the self-titled Sony Classical CD pictured above (there is also a 2nd CD called "D'Ici et d'Ailleurs"), and I can heartily recommend it!
Gilles plays the violin with a beautifully measured vibrato, and exquisite timing, and this album is a consistently appealing & satisfying one.
The T.M. Boys provide subtle & clever backing: Jean-Marc Apap (his brother) truly has the sweetest Viola sound I have ever heard, and the 'rhythm section' of Chris Judge (Guitar) & Brendan Statom (Double-Bass), who manage to ride a line between reserved & maniacal throughout, is inspired & inspiring.
