Gillnets commonly used in New Jersey's fisheries range from several hundred to several thousand feet in length.
The New Jersey gillnet fleet is made up of smaller vessels, generally under 50 feet in length.
The size of the mesh in a gillnet, along with the fisherman's intimate knowledge of the behavior of the fish he is seeking, guarantees that bycatch of other species will be minimized.

When Europeans began gillnet fishing, their boats were oar-powered and up to 26 feet in length.
Many of these earlier gillnet boats were also powered by small sails, and were often referred to as "row-sail" boats.
Because power drums could set and draw the gillnets into the boat faster, fishermen were able to fish in areas where water and weather conditions had previously prevented them from fishing.

The gillnet is a fishing device dating back before the time that Christ fished with his disciples and one traditionally used by the Ojibwe in the Lake Superior region.
Other factors that improve gillnet selectivity include the location of the net, how the net is “hung,” and how long the net remains in the water (the duration of the set).
The gillnet fishery is monitored by tribal conservation officers and biologists and also by state conservation wardens.

State weighs partial gillnet ban - The Honolulu Advertiser - Hawaii's Newspaper
Gillnets have been a divisive issue in the fishing community, and a statewide series of public meetings is expected to draw heated comment.
While supporters say that gillnets, properly used, are an efficient, appropriate way for families to gather marine resources for food, opponents argue that the nets are indiscriminate in that they catch much of what swims by, including protected species such as turtles.
A 300-foot abandoned gillnet in Nawiliwili Bay last week had caught a green sea turtle, shark, lobster, several varieties of fish, crabs and other species, and had also wrapped up dozens of coral boulders by the time State Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement officials pulled it out of the water Tuesday.

MBNMS: Central California Gillnet Effort and Bycatch of Sensitive Species, 1990-1998
During the 1980s, extensive bycatch of seabirds and marine mammals in central California's set gillnet fisheries prompted a series of area and depth closures, which ultimately appeared successful at reducing mortality of the species of primary concern, Common Murre (Uria aalge), sea otter (Enhydra lutris), and harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena).
Since then gillnet effort coincides with higher beach deposition rates for all three species.
In this study, historical entanglement rate data are combined with estimates of fishing effort for 1995 - 1998 to produce several sets of mortality estimates based on a variety of assumptions.

MBNMS: Managing Marine Mammal Bycatch In Dynamic Habitats: Lessons From A California Gillnet Fishery
Although this strategy is often necessitated by a scarcity of funding, it can be dangerously ineffective at detecting changes in mortality patterns, as recently documented in the California halibut gillnet fishery.
During the 1980’s, central California gillnet fisheries caused significant mortality of several marine species, including harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena), and southern sea otter (Enhydra lutris).
A series of restrictions on fishing in shallow waters ultimately appeared successful at reducing bycatch, with a 1990-94 observer program reporting no sea otter entanglements and sustainable levels of harbor porpoise mortality.
