POICA-Israel inaugurates Gilo ‘300’ terminal in Bethlehem
This Iron Gate that came to terminate the Segregation Wall in the northern entrance of Bethlehem was closed, and is anticipated to open twice a year for religious missions, Christmas and Easter Times.
Furthermore, the Israeli military busses coming from Jerusalem and heading to Rachel's Tomb area will access the Gilo 300 checkpoint and directly drive into the road already constructed alongside the Segregation Wall to then reach another gate constructed north of the Tomb area and guarded by the Israeli soldiers.
See Photo 3 and Map of the route of the buses.

 Gilo & Har Choma
Gilo, a picturesque community of over 40,000 residents, is situated on the highest point on the Southern corner of Jerusalem's borders, and sits on three hills overlooking the city.
Ironically, the name Gilo was given to the new Jerusalem neighborhood because of its proximity to Beit Jala, which was thought to be a corruption of the biblical name Gilo and therefore the site of that city.
Gilo was established between 1973 and 1979, with the original streets named for the different perfumes used as incense in the Temple.

In 1984,when Gilo extension called Metzpe Bethlehem was underway, Mohana returned from the Bethlehem market with his father,a tailor named Salman, to find a bulldozer on its way to remove his two story stone house.
Likewise, the 30,000 settlers of Gilo, like the 150,000 other Israeli settlers in Arab East Jerusalem, do not want to abandon their property without a suitable alternative and, while many are taking an extended vacation for the holidays, they will be back.

The view from Gilo By Uri Bank (November 17) - All of a sudden we, the residents of Gilo, have found ourselves on the front lines of this violent stage of the Israeli-Arab conflict.
There is a general concensus that the situation in Gilo is intolerable and that "something must be done." But the government seems to care more about not escalating the situation and not exacerbating world public opinion than it does about protecting the residents of Gilo.
I, and my fellow members of the Residents Committee for a Safe Gilo, have come to the conclusion that the government should push back the boundary of Area A by a kilometer and a half, which is the range of light-arms fire.

However, Gilo, which I have visited on many occasions, is a large illegal settlement, built on land taken from the Bethlehem area.
The owners of the land on which Gilo is built come from Beit Jala and Beit Safafa.
The reason both sides live "cheek by jowl" is that Gilo was built to restrict the expansion of Beit Jala, to hem it in and to form a concrete barrier between Jerusalem and the Bethlehem district.

 CNN Finally Gets the Message
Some of the land on which Gilo is built was taken from the Palestinians of Beit Jala -- Gilo is Hebrew for Jala -- but no hint of this historical background will be permitted on CNN.
However, by censoring the word "settlement" for Gilo, CNN is perpetrating a lie.
Gilo was illegally annexed by Israel after the 1967 war -- not just "occupied" as CNN wishes its viewers to believe -- and far from being a "neighbourhood on the outskirts of Jerusalem," it was built on land which Israel -- again illegally -- used to extend the boundaries of Jerusalem.

FAIR MEDIA ADVISORY: Euphemisms for Israeli Settlements Confuse Coverage
As Kifner indicated, Gilo is built on land seized by Israel after the 1967 war.
Again, Gilo's status as an illegal settlement does not justify the Palestinian killings of civilians there, but it is central to understanding why Gilo is such a hot spot.
For news outlets to report on Gilo simply as a Jerusalem neighborhood under attack, without explaining its legal status, is a gross distortion-- especially since the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, which has claimed so many thousands of lives, is at bottom about who should control the land.

The shooting on Gilo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
From the first days of al-Aqsa Intifada, Jerusalem's Gilo neighborhood was subjected to heavy small-arms fire from the adjacent Palestinian town of Beit Jala.
In spite of the fact that no one killed from this shooting, the situation in which the Palestinians were firing on Jerusalem was insufferable from Israel's point of view and led to harsh reprisals against the Beit Jala homes used for staging, escalating from tank fire to helicopter gunships.
The shooting had another layer of controversy due to the mostly Palestinian Christian residents of Beit Jala reporting that their homes were used against their will by Muslim militant groups, and claims that the strategy was designed to effect a demographic change in the area.

Gilo was established in East Jerusalem, which Palestinians hope to declare as the capital of a future state.

While it is true that no one has died at Gilo from gunfire, it is extremely disingenuous of Schmetzer to go out of his way to make this point, while at the same time minimizing or altogether ignoring the human and property damages that were in fact suffered there (by gunfire or otherwise).
Moreover, contrary to the article’s claim that “no one had died at Gilo so far,” Gilo resident Amos Makhlouf, 30, was found murdered in an olive grove between Beit Jala and Gilo on Oct. 30.
