On their voyage to New Iceland, the Icelanders had decided on the name of “Gimli” (which is Icelandic for “paradise”) for their first town in the new land.
Throughout the coming decades, New Iceland was to develop as a “tourist town.” Tourists from across Canada flocked to Gimli in the hot Manitoba summers, to camp or stay in hotels and rented cottages on the shores of Lake Winnipeg.
While Gimli is no longer the sole province of Icelanders, the Icelandic culture and character have had a major impact on the development of Manitoba.

Ed Helwer, MLA for Gimli, on behalf of Manitoba Finance Minister Eric Stefanson and John Harvard, MP for Charleswood-Assiniboine, on behalf of Ron J. Duhamel, Secretary of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced today that the federal and provincial governments will each contribute $600,000 towards the Gimli Harbourfront Development.
The development of Gimli's south harbour, site of the Pan American Games sailing venue, will see parking spaces increased, container storage expanded, the existing harbour dredged, the south harbour are expanded, boat berths constructed and a new wooden walkway developed along the breakwater.
