Gimmelwald is a small village in the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland, halfway up the mountain between Stechelberg and Mürren.
The tram travels down from Gimmelwald to Stechelberg on the floor of the Lauterbrunnen valley, where there are bus and train connections to the rest of Switzerland, and up to the town of Mürren and the Schilthorn.
Gimmelwald, together with Wengen, Muerren, Isenfluh, Stechelberg, and Lauterbrunnen, belongs to the municipality of Lauterbrunnen.

Gimmelwald for me is too isolated to spend three nights in but if it's solitude you want you'll have it.
Gimmelwald - at least know what you're getting into - you may well love it or you may well rather be down in civilization - it all depends on your outlook.
Gimmelwald is a few farmhouses and little else - farmers now milk tourists more than cows, though you can still 'sleep in the straw' in a cow barn when the bovines are up in Alpine pastures during the summer.

Gimmelwald sits 4,593 feet above sea level and is a small community of some 130 residents and at least that many cows.
We stayed at the Pension Gimmelwald which was a great place.
The Pension is over 100 years old and had large rooms, which we didn't get too often on this trip, and great food.

I'm planning to travel to gimmelwald in december [8th - 16th], and travelling to sion and surrounding areas.
Gimmelwald seems to me like a place to do hiking and in winter skiing, like many places in Switzeland.
I've been to Gimmelwald and I have to say that if you're looking on visiting other places in the surrounding area by train or bus (such as Sion) then staying in Gimmelwald is not the best idea because of its location.

Poor, happily stuck in the past, Gimmelwald has a happy youth hostel, some bed and breakfast accommodation and small hotels.
A family atmosphere spontaneously comes into being around the pasta on the kitchen stove and spreads into the common room.
A few hundred feet above Gimmelwald is the village of Mürren.

After you get to Gimmelwald, get off the cable car, look around for 15 minutes (which is about all it takes) and catch the next cable car to Stechelberg.
You have seen it all from the top of the Schilthorn and there is nothing in Gimmelwald to hold my interest other than a watering trough where I could fill my canteen for a drink of cold spring water.
As you return to Gimmelwald, the trail is relatively easy, downhill generally speaking.

Just as we arrived at the Gimmelwald cable station to go to Mürren three young American girls from the Philadelphia area came into the station all out of breath and a bit upset.
On their way down the hill from where they were staying a guy jumped out of the woods, butt naked except for hiking shoes and a blonde wig.
She's the one who said "I'm 23 years old but I want my mommy and a hug, and I want to cry right now." Geri gave her a hug and she was well on her way to crying when a lady walked up to learn some of the details about the "event."

We decided to forgo the trip to the top because the web cameras that were posted with views of the top showed that the clouds had rolled in and that the views were completely blocked.
Gimmelwald is an incredibly small quaint town of farmers and cow herds.
The total population of the town is 150 and almost everyone in town participates in the cow, cheese or hay industry.

This was a our third attempt to get to Gimmelwald, and this time we actually made it.
The gondola in Gimmelwald was under repairs (they take it down for three weeks to rotate the cables and prepare for the coming ski season).
We’ll definitely be returning to Gimmelwald in the spring, maybe if Erika’s dad comes out we can take him along so he can smoke our asses going up the hill.

No, not now, the idea of having to work doesn't seem to be in harmony with Gimmelwald, but spending a good chunk of retirement here is worth scheming about and adding it to that pocket full of someday places.
Now and then we think that having more money might make a better life, but then take a look at this: I'm here in a small town, breathing the best air, eating the best farm food, surrounded by friendly people with sights that classify as a natural wonder of the world.
While I say things like this about places like Gimmelwald, you have to have a certain eye, or shall I see say spirit, to see such things.

One was Gimmelwald in the Swiss Alps, and another was Bruges in Belgium.
Gimmelwald was a very small village located between Mürren and Schilthorn, that large tourists group rarely visited.
I was so impressed with the simplicity of the village that I didn't consider having to use the gondola an inconvenient.

Gimelwald is a wood cabin town perched on the Swiss alps at 4,485 feet loaded with woodsy alpine goodness and a couple mountain horses who don’t mind the cold.
Though there are a few hostels in Gimmelwald, there’s supermarkets and hotels and many restaurants (and even a ‘disco inferno’ dance club).
The trail was uphill and I saw several familes and some solo sledders came sliding past.

 Getting to Gimmelwald
From the latter the fastest journey to Gimmelwald takes 55 minutes, and trains leave about once an hour.
Gimmelwald has no food store, and this route, which passes through Mürren gives you a chance to buy your groceries on your way to Gimmelwald instead of taking a specific hike to Mürren later.
Keep in mind, the last gondola to Gimmelwald is at 23:10 and there is no way to access the village until the first gondola at 6:10 in the morning.

At Lauterbrunnen, there is a Post Coach (in the evening, a Schilthornbahn Coach) waiting across the street in front of the tourist office going to the Schilthorn cable car station at Stechelberg.
The first cable cable car stop is Gimmelwald.
