If you are a developer interested in creating plug-ins or working on the GIMP source code, you may want to download some additional packages (these are not needed for normal users):
GIMP should run on any NT-based version of Windows (NT4, 2000, XP or Vista).
Older GIMP versions (2.0.x) could also work with older versions of Windows such as Windows 95 but they are not supported anymore.

One glaring problem with the GIMP is the hoops one has to jump through just to cut an image off of its background.
In GIMP, all the lasso does is select an irregularly shaped area and you still cut into the background.
GIMP just cannot leave the background behind on a single layer image all that easily.

There's not really a good explanation of why this is neccasary, but its caused by weird interactions between the batch mode parser and the scheme parser thats part of Script-Fu.
This shouldn't be a problem with any of the scripts in the main gimp distribution, but it is something to watch for.
