The Institute of Ismaili Studies: Publication Synopsis of A Scent of Sandalwood   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The Ginans are a body of religious lyrics reflecting the synthetic and ecumenical reach characteristic of allied genres, such as the poetry of the Sufi and Bhakti traditions in the mediaeval, Indo-Islamic environment.
The result is a translation suggestive of the depth of religious thought, feeling and imagination out of which this poetry was born and the lyrical beauty of the form in which this experience found a voice.
The poetry of the Ginans illustrates a historically and culturally specific conception of the world, and of the norms peculiar to that culture, as well as a religious perception that forms a significant part of the religious experience of mankind.

This project explores the historical moments of ginan (Gujarati devotional poetry) canonization--first in the Aga Khan Case of 1866 and then in 1900--and argues that both junctures were marked by the intersection of British colonial interests and the charismatic claims of the Aga Khans in consigning "religious" identity to a caste group of khojas.
In addition to analyzing the significant moments of ginan canonicity among the khoja community, this dissertation simultaneously offers readings of poems and histories of ginan traditions that were excluded from the official canon and dismissed from the hegemonic narrative of Ismaili history.
I argue that ginan poetry reveals a pre-colonial heteroglossic vernacular tradition that was shaped by encounters with contemporaneous devotional traditions of the 17th-18th centuries.

The term ‘ginan’ is believed to derive from the Sanskrit jnan, an abstract noun, which may be variously rendered as ‘knowledge’, ‘wisdom’ or ‘cognition’ (reminiscent, to some extent, of the Greek gnosis).
