Harrison, from the UK, had recently moved to Massachusetts with her American husband, Gary Pfisterer, who was leading the 11-member climbing team on the Dhaulagiri expedition.
Harrison was regarded as one of the strongest female climbers in the world.

The Ginette Harrison School was established over two years ago, and has increased in size and popularity.
Children are all in uniform (though on hot days ties can be removed!) and they enjoy facilities that many other schools in Nepal do not, including a library, computers, typewriters, and a good supply of exercise books, pens and pencils.
The Ginette Harrison Memorial Fund sent Clive Hughes to visit the school last August (2002), and he was very impressed with the motivation of the pupils, and the teaching standards.

We first got to know Bob when Ginette Harrison's friends came to us and ask that we announce the Ginette Harrison Fund.
The Ginette Harrison Fund is now a regular £240 per month in child sponsorship donations, and other project donations made, which means that we can afford to keep the school in all books and equipment, and events.
Now we are setting up a "Resource Centre" for both the schools to use, and we will put in a library typewriters, and computers etc. So far the extra project money has been about £1000 for the government school and £1500 for the Ginette Harrison School.

One vivid memory is Gary walking hand-in-hand to the summit of Everest in 1993 with his late wife, Ginette Harrison.
They jointly climbed the world's third, sixth, ninth and thirteenth highest mountains and on a number of occasions Gary unselfishly gave up his own summit bids in support of Ginette.
He narrowly escaped the avalanche, which tragically killed his wife while the pair were attempting Dhaulagiri in 1999.
