Gin and its Lowlands cousin Genever (Jenever in Belgium) are white spirits that are flavored with juniper berries and so-called botanicals (a varied assortment of herbs and spices).
British gins tend to be high proof (90° or 45% ABV) and citrus-accented from the use of dried lemon and Seville orange peels in the mix of botanicals.
Gin, on the other hand, did not require any aging, and was relatively easy to make by mixing raw alcohol with juniper berry extract and other flavorings and spices in a large container such as a bathtub (thus the origin of the term "Bathtub Gin").

In the UK Gordon's gin is considered the standard, for some reason it isn't considered as well in the US, except possibly by me. I consider it my personal standard of a traditional gin to which I compare other gins.
While this gin is pleasant it didn't do much for me because it was so light in flavor, more like a vodka wishing it was a gin, and not the real deal.
After distillation with the botanicals, the gin is then infused with orris/iris root and iris flower which bring in additional notes of floral and spicy flavors and give it a pleasing blue color.

We can only hope that, like England's Gin Act of 1751 and the repeal of prohibition in the U.S. in 1929, there will be a future day where an armistice is declared and we can take control of the drug trade, and, ultimately, attack the root causes that drive people to abuse substances.
Patrick Dillon's account of the Gin Craze of the 18th century is an informative, well-written, and lively account of the social problems surrounding the introduction of high-octane spirits into English society.
