Giorgos Seferis (Γιώργος Σεφέρης) (February 19, 1900 – September 20, 1971) was one of the most important Greek poets of the 20th century, and a Nobel laureate.
In 1963, Seferis was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature "for his eminent lyrical writing, inspired by a deep feeling for the Hellenic world of culture." [1] Seferis was the first Greek to receive the prize (and the only, until Odysseas Elytis became a Nobel laureate in 1979).
Seferis did not live to see the end of the junta in 1974, the direct result of Turkey’s invasion of Cyprus, which had been prompted by the junta’s attempt to overthrow Cyprus’ Archbishop Makarios.

It was the multimedia exhibition under the title “Giorgos Seferis – Poet and Citizen”, the last one –but not least– of a series of events organised during 2000 by the Ministry of Culture for the “Seferis Year”, on the occasion of the completion of 100 years since our Nobelist poet was born.
When the organising committee of the “Seferis Year” announced the general framework of the events’ programme, the idea for a multimedia exhibition was well accepted but it also sounded mysterious.
Between all the archive material, a predominant position was left for the manuscripts of the poet’s father, Stelios Seferiadis, and his translations, first impressions of the Greek poet’s works and clippings referring to the Literature Nobel Award to the poet in 1963 as well as his death.
