Unlike many of his contemporaries (including Puccini), Ruggero Leoncavallo was a man of letters and in touch with the avant-garde trends of the day, including Italy 's giovane scuola.
This “young school” of writers was guided by the philosophy that the author's hand should not be apparent to the reader.
Pagliacci, however, is not based on a work by the giovane scuola.

 Biography
Palma Giovane (Jacopo di Antonio Negretti), Venetian painter, great-nephew of Palma Vecchio.
He is said to have been a pupil of Titian, but this tradition has been doubted (it is probably based on the fact that he completed the Pietà which Titian left incomplete at his death).
From 1580-90 he painted cycles of large canvases either for Venetian Schools or sacred buildings (the sacristies of S. Giacomo in Orio and of the Jesuit church, the Scuola di San Giovanni Evangelista, and the Ospedaletto dei Crociferi).

Don Lorenzo Perosi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Despite the relative obscurity of his name today, Perosi was a famous and prominent member of the Giovane Scuola, of which the most important Verismo composers or Veristi (Puccini, Mascagni, Leoncavallo, Giordano, and Cilea) were all considered members.
His French admirers included Debussy, Massenet, Guilmant, and D’Indy, all of whom were deeply impressed by the 1899 French Première of La Risurrezione di Cristo.
Unlike the other members of the Giovane Scuola, Perosi was the only one to be significantly influenced by pre-Classical repertoire.

The Scuola was built in 1711, two years after the church, and awarding it to Gasparini might have been a consolation prize of sorts.
The scuola was formed by two colonelli - two branches of the art of goldsmithing - the tiraoro who worked gold into threads and wrapped it around a silk support, and the battioro who beat gold leaf into extremely fine thing sheets which were protected by layers of paper.
Originally the scuola was open only to Venetians, but eventually they accepted foreigners because despite working with such a valuable metal, the scuola was not a wealthy group.

In the late 1990s, a journalist in a major Boston newspaper made the absurd claim that Verismo "began with Cavalleria Rusticana in 1890 and pretty much ended with Pagliacci two years later." This is patently incorrect.

Andrea Chénier, Fedora, and Siberia also demonstrate many of the characteristics of works by the giovane scuola, or "young school, " which referred to a group of Italian opera composers born after 1850, including Catalani, Franchetti, Puccini, and Mascagni.
With its roots in verismo, the giovane scuolo strove for overt emotionalism in settings that combined local and historical color, such as the French Revolutionary songs in Andrea Chénier and the Russian rhythms and songs of Fedora.

The 1880s and 1890s saw the growth of a group of Italian composers who were called the Giovane Scuola Italiana, the "Young Italian School." Interested in modern and international trends in music, they looked to Germany and France for inspiration.
After 1890, the Verismo ("Realism") movement led some of these musicians to write operas with realistic or naturalistic themes, while others combined modern and traditional ideas.
