Giovanni Battista Viotti (May 12, 1755 - March 3, 1824) was an Italian violinist and composer.
The 'Viotti ex-Bruce', renamed in honour of its previous owner, was purchased by the Royal Academy of Music in September 2005.
Viotti's most notable compositions are his 29 violin concertos which were an influence on Ludwig van Beethoven.

Viotti made his first concert tour abroad with his teacher in 1780, moving thereafter to Paris, where he made a strong impression with his playing, entered the service of Marie-Antoinette and concerned himself with operatic administration.
Viotti's orchestral music consists principally of his 29 violin concertos, in a style that develops from the compositions of the early 1780s to the romantic lyricism of the later concertos, works that strongly influenced the concertos of younger violinist-composers.
Viotti's chamber music includes fifteen Quatuors concertants, a number of trios for two violins and cello, duos, many of them for two violins, and works for solo violin.

Viotti had arrived at his style by fusing the tradition of the Italian violin school with the operatic brio of French music and the symphonic experience of German masters, notably Haydn.
Viotti's concertos have symphonic scope, particularly in the first movements; the quality of orchestral writing was such that the public would applaud after the opening exposition as if it were a symphony.
Viotti was the most influential violinist in the generation between Tartini and Paganini and the last great representative of the Italian classical tradition of Corelli.

Because of difficulties caused by the Revolution, Viotti left for London in 1792.

After a successful stay in Paris 1782–92, where he was violinist to Marie Antoinette and founded an opera house, he settled in London, where he became manager of the King's Theatre in 1797.
After studying with Gaetano Pugnani, Viotti joined the court orchestra at Turin in 1775, but obtained leave of absence in 1780 to go on tour with Pugnani.

 Giovanni Battista Viotti
iovanni Battista Viotti (born Fontanetto Po, 12 May 1755; died London, 3 March 1824) stands in the representative line of the classical Italian violin school stemming from Corelli, Tartini and other 17th century masters.
He was a pupil of Pugnani with whom Viotti later formed a professional partnership embarking on an extended concert tour throughout Europe during the years 1780- 1781, with an extended stay in St Petersburg.
As a later critic has perceptively remarked, 'the modern orchestra was born when Viotti came to London and joined forces with Salomon in 1793'.(1) He was acting-manager of the Italian Opera at the King's Theatre for the 1794-5 season, in 1797 being appointed leader and director of the orchestra at that theatre.
