Giovanni Cardinal Canestri, Archbishop emeritus of Genoa, was born on 30 September 1918 in Castelspina, diocese of Alessandria (Italy).
He was ordained a priest on 12 April 1941 and began his pastoral ministry in Rome.
Canestri was created and proclaimed a Cardinal by John Paul II in the consistory of 28 June 1988.
