Don Camillo: About Author Giovanni Guareschi
Giovannino Guareschi himself was so willing, and it was after the war that he would produce his mature writings: the ones which had the biggest impact in his lifetime and for which he is most remembered today.
Of course, Guareschi wrote on non-political topics, as well, and he was particularly successful with another continuing series of humorous newspaper essays (also periodically collected into books), this one depicting the joys and trials of family life in the new Italy.
Guareschi would later complain that his 14-month stint in jail in Parma was, in some ways, worse than his time in the German Lager.

In the early 1950’s, Guareschi decided to move his family to the country–to the village of Roncole Verdi, where the multi-talented author had a new family home built according to his own design.
Convinced of his source, however, Guareschi would not recant… and, as this was his second run-in with the courts in as many years (in 1952 he’d published a cartoon mocking the Italian president–a crime in those days–and earned a suspended sentence), a prison sentence was mandated.
Giovannino Guareschi was an extraordinarily talented man who gave himself to a variety of pursuits, both professional and amateur.

I read this book when I was only thirteen, which wasn't old enough to grasp all of the subtleties in Guareschi's political and cultural satire and humor, but I did get some of it, despite my basically still being a kid.
Guareschi wrote a number of other successful books, including a series of Don Camillo books, but I don't know how many of them were translated into English.
If there were, I never saw any of them, but I enjoyed this one, and it now stands as a window into another era of Cold War politics that is rapidly receding in the wake of the Berlin Wall's coming down and now the events of of 9/11.

The adversaries are heavyweights in every sense of the word, but the beatings are without any real malice, and both parties find that in the end they agree on the important issues of life.
The characters and story were born purely by mischance, as Guareschi, having literally 30 minutes to go to press on a magazine he was writing for, invented and created a short story.
Be prepared to smile throughout, at the gentle humour that Guareschi injects into the stories, and to laugh aloud at some of the antics of our hero.

 Giovanni Guareschi's "non-Camillo" books
Many of those familiar with Giovanni Guareschi's "Little World of Don Camillo" are unaware that among the Italian humorist's other translated writings are several books set in other "little worlds." For instance, there's Guareschi's world of home and hearth, represented in English by three books of comic stories about the author's family.
And there's also the world of Continental high society, or GG's stylized version thereof, which readers in English can visit via two charming farces dating from the beginning of the author's career.
Finally, there is the dark world of the German internment camp where Guareschi spent several years during the Second World War; his collected prison writings round out the works available in English.
