Legrenzi   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Giovanni Legrenzi was important as a composer of operas, of which most were produced for the Venice opera houses.
Legrenzi writes the beginning and end in e minor with many phrygian harmonies, the reason for leaving the original key signature devoid of sharps.  The vocal range (bass baritone) from E to e' is mainly exploited to depict the torrents of tears which Illiso pours into the mountain's streams".
The dedication refers to the nobleman’s familiarity with Legrenzi’s previous works, and this underlines his connection with aristocratic patrons: one of these was Ippolito Bentivoglio, who contributed the libretto for at least one of his operas.

During his lifetime Giovanni Legrenzi had great success as a musician and composer, and even today his significance has continued to be recognized.
Legrenzi is recognized as the most richly imaginative representative of the Venetian late baroque period, and both Bach and Handel borrowed themes from him for their own compositions.
Although a complete, reliable biography is still lacking, it is certain that Legrenzi, during his time as organist at the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Bergamo, produced an important cycle of trio sonatas with his Sonatas op.

 What I Like About...
The seventeenth century tangle of two violins that is La Raspona reminds me of the thirteenth century tangle of three tenors that is Sederunt.
It is as if, after grabbing our attention, Legrenzi slowed the music down to insure that we appreciated each violin fully.
I particularly like your comparisons to other pieces (Sederunt), which for me make the Legrenzi seem much more alive than it would be were it preserved in an academic glass case.
