  Barnes & Noble.com - Artist Bio
Born to an operatic tenor, Pacini was placed on a path that would have led him to the service of sacred music, and studied composition in Bologna from the tender age of 12.
Nonetheless by 1830, Pacini began to feel the heat of competition from Bellini and Donizetti and after a long string of failures he retired from opera to pursue the sacred composition he'd abandoned in his youth.
Pacini wrote a valuable autobiography, Le mie memorie artistiche (1865) and was renowned as a teacher, holding posts in Lucca and Parma even as he cranked out operas by the dozens.

Giovanni Pacini - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Giovanni Pacini (February 2, 1796 - December 6, 1867) was an Italian composer, best known for his operas.
There can be no doubt that both Pacini, and his contemporary, Nicola Vaccai, exerted a much stronger influence on Bellini than they had been credited with before.
His position was greatly enhanced by the rapid-fire successes of Alessandro nelle Indie (Naples, 1824--given and recorded in London in November 2006), Amazilia (Naples 1824, revised, Vienna, 1827), the previously mentioned L'Ultimo Giorno di Pompei (Naples, 1825) and Gli arabi nelle Gallie (Milan, 1827).

Classical Net Review - Pacini - Maria Regina d'Inghilterra
Giovanni Pacini (1796-1867) was a contemporary of Rossini, Donizetti, and Bellini, but while their work has survived and flourished, his considerable output (more than 70 operas) has faded into oblivion.
His work was conventional for its time, lying somewhere between the bel canto lyricism of Bellini and the dramatic power to come from Verdi, without the melodiousl inspiration of the former or the urgent vitality of the latter.
Pacini was not one to subordinate a good tune to the requirements of plot and characterization; many of the arias seem to have little relationship to what is happening on stage.

Opera Today : An Introduction to Pacini’s Saffo
By early 1835 Giovanni Pacini had written almost fifty operas during the course of a career launched in 1813.
Pacini sought to create a more continuous drama in much of the work, and the extent to which he gives lyrical expression to scenes of dialogue is remarkable.
But it is Pacini’s handling of the dialogue that is particularly noteworthy: he tries, usually with great success, to lend lyrical and dramatic force to each expression.

Whereas the other examples all showed how inspiration and new techniques breathed life into (or at least provide some botox for) the expiring corpse of Italian popular opera in the first decades of the nineteenth century, Pacini is one of those who clearly belonged to the guild of dead-horse floggers.
Even the spirited conducting of David Parry, the sterling singing of Bruce Ford in the name part, and the powerful performance of Laura Claycomb (whose flaming mane of hair was by far the most dramatic element of the evening) in the role of Cleofide, were unable to hold the attention for long.
Like the Bourbons, Pacini remembered everything but learnt nothing, and like them, I fear, his operas are doomed to extinction, all 80 of them.

Classics Today.com - Your Online Guide to Classical Music
As the valuable, informative notes accompanying this release tell us, this opera was so poorly received at its premiere in 1835 that Giovanni Pacini stopped composing for five years--and this from a man who since 1813 had produced two or three operas annually.
What this opera is, is fun: exciting melodies; arias conceived grandly to show off the singers' abilities; thrilling, if oom-pah cabalettas (after all, Pacini was known as "Maestro delle cabalette"); nice, rhythmically-propelled ensembles; and big finales.
Here, Pacini uses coloratura to denote not anger but craziness, and Larmore, whipping through both ends of her voice and articulating runs with a vengeance, is breathtaking.
