  Schiaparelli, Giovanni Virginio (1835-1910)
Born in Savigliano, Piedmont, Schiaparelli graduated from the University of Turin and studied at the Royal Observatory in Berlin under Johann Encke, discoverer of a short-period comet that now bears his name.
Moreover, Schiaparelli himself clearly favored a maritime view of Mars in which the dark areas were seas and the brighter regions land.
Cautious and unflambouyant though he was – in sharp contrast to Percival Lowell – Schiaparelli nevertheless seems to have been biased in his Martian studies by a underlying desire to prove the habitability (if not the actual habitation) of other worlds in the solar system.

Two years later he went to Berlin to study astronomy under Encke, and in 1859 was appointed assistant observer at Pulkova, a post which he resigned in i86o for a similar one at Brera, Milan.
Schiaparelli was primarily an observerhis first discovery was of the asteroid Hesperia in 1861but he had also considerable mathematical gifts, as is shown in his treatment of orbital motions, published in 1864, and in other papers.
On his retirement he turned to the astronomy of the Hebrews and Babylonians; his earlier results are given in his L Astronomia nell antico Testamento (1903), a work which has been translated into English and German, whilst later ones are to be found in various journals, the last being in Scientia (1908).

Anecdote - Giovanni Virginio Schiaparelli - Cannelloni on Mars!   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
One day in 1877, it was reported that Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli had observed, through his telescope, canals on the surface of Mars.
This apparent evidence of the existence of a Martian civilisation inspired H. Wells to write The War of the Worlds, which, in turn, inspired Orson Welles's famous radio news bulletin hoax (which led thousands of listeners across America to believe that they were actually listening to the live report of a martian invasion).
Schiaparelli's report of Martian channels ("canali"), possibly carved by ancient rivers or glaciers, was mistranslated into English as "canals." Despite Schiaparelli's protestations, many astronomers latched onto the notion of life on Mars, and public interest naturally exploded.

In 1877 an Italian astronomer, Giovanni Schiaparelli, turned his telescope to Mars and saw what he thought were lines or grooves on the surface of Mars.
To describe them Schiaparelli used the Italian word "canali," which means "channels." Schiaparelli continued his observations into the 1880s; his writings on the canali on Mars became widely known and were translated into other languages.
Unfortunately, when his writings were translated into English the word canali was translated not as "lines" or "channels" but as "canals." However, the English word "canals" does not imply something of natural origin, but is typically interpreted as something artificial.
