Gippsland’s building industry saw strong levels of building activity compared to recent years, the Planning Minister John Thwaites said today.
Despite the introduction of the GST which saw a national building slump, building activity in Gippsland rose from $293 million to $300 million between 1999 and 2000, and was up from $272 million in 1998.
Gippsland was the only region with higher building activity during 1999 – a 2.4% increase – with rural Victoria experiencing a small decline of 4%.

Gippsland, the Australian based resource company, says it is not the unnamed seller of tantalum, to Tantalum Australia, as speculated earlier by Mineweb.
Gippsland says supply contracts have been made with two of the world’s top eight major consumers of tantalum concentrate.
“Gippsland’s prime aim is to deal direct with prime tantalum consumers of international standing and is disinclined to deal with intermediaries or traders in the commodity,” said Jack Telford, the company’s executive chairman in a statement.
