Girard township was carved out of Elk Creek, Fairview and Springfield in 1832, receiving its name from Stephen Girard, the Philadelphia millionaire, who held a large body of land on the adjoining township of Conneaut.
Girard township is bounded on the north by Lake Erie, on the east by Fairview and Franklin, on the south by Conneaut and Elk Creek and on the west by Springfield.
Girard township claims the honor of having had the second oldest living person in the county- Patrick Ward, who died at the age of 105.

Citizens in the township hoped to entice him to invest in the community, but his early death brought an end to those hopes and the residents prospered on their own.
Girard was in the path of the Underground Railroad and just prior to and during the Civil War individuals in the community where known to offer shelter and comfort to those fleeing souls.
Girard, once known as a "show town" because of the number of circuses that wintered there, could now be called a "sports town." High school football and boys and girls basketball take priority with the townspeople during the fall and early winter.

At the southern end of the township, Lockport (today known as Platea) incorporated as a borough in 1849, also as a result of the canal.

It is currently being restored by the Girard Historical Society with a $20,000 grant from the Department of the Interior.
The first newspaper, the Girard News, was established in 1882, but soon went out of business and there was no paper until the establishment in 1887 of the Girard Grit, a name reflecting the quality of the local air.

 Girard Township
The census gave Girard a population of 400 in 1850, 616 in 1860, 704 in 1870, 703 in 1880, and 626 in 1890.
Girard has been unfortunate in the matter of hotel buildings, the old Girard House, which occupied the site of the present Avenue House, and the Central House of Joshua Evans, which stood on the east side of the public square, having both been burned.

The township is situated in the northern part of the county, and it is bounded on the north by part of the dividing line between Elk and Clearfield counties, on the east by Coyington township, on the south by parts of Graham and Bradford townships and west by Graham township.

He came to Girard over half a century ago, and with the exception of a few years spent at Teegarden and Youngstown, he had resided in Girard ever since.
Although having left Girard a great many years ago he was still possessed of many friends among the older residents who entertained for him the highest reward.
