Melian is the name of a Maia who served both Vana and Este; she dwelt long in Lorien, tending the trees that flower in the gardens of Irmo, ere she came to Middle-earth.
Melian ruled as a Queen of the mightiest kingodm in ME. The history of Doriath itself and within the course of the major events in Beleriand the strong influence of Melian can be strongly traced and noticed from the very begininng to the very end.
The Girdle of Melian is undoubtedly a marvel:

 Middle-earth Mythology - Melian
Melian was a Maia, of the race of the Valar.
The Silmarillion says that Melian lived in the gardens of Lorien, and "among all his people, there were none more beautiful than Melian, nor more wise, nore more skilled in songs of enchantment." All of the Valar would stop to listen to her sing, and she was the one who taught the Nightingales to sing.
It was said that Melian was always accompanied by nightengales, whom she taught to sing, and her voice was exquisite, that gift she passed on to her daughter Luthien, as well as her beauty, curage and wisdom.

After the departure of the remaining Eldar they dwelled together in the land of Doriath, and Melian fenced the land with a Girdle of enchantment; and after a time she bore Elwe a daughter: Luthien the Fair, who inherited her Mother's voice and beauty as well as her divine lineage.
Melian dwelled with Thingol for the remainder of the Age; but, as is told in The Silmarillion, the deeds of that time enmeshed her husband at the last, though against her design; and he was murdered.

Melian did not direct the growth of the foliage around her, nor did she need to protect her home against the ravages of time, her girdle was one of confusion and bewilderment.
Granted she may have and I bet did, use something of the lore she learned from Melian to weave the power of the ring throughout the land of Lothlorien for many miles whereas the effects of healind in Rivendell were only mentioned to be quite localized.
Well, obviously Melian was not know as a warrior tot he extent that Fingolfin was, but I imagine she could have done nearly as well.

Entmoot - The Silmarillion: Ch.10. Of the Sindar
As only one with ‘a power greater than that of Melian the Maia’ could pass the barrier, there could not have been that many in ME that were greater than she was.
I always had a feeling (probably unwarranted) that Melian's power was gradually diminishing during her sojourn in Middle-earth; in fact, to such an extent that after Thingol's death she became unable to maintain the Girdle any longer.
For Melian was of the divine race of the Valar, and she was a Maia of great power and wisdom; but for love of Elwë Singollo she took upon herself the form of the Elder Children of Ilúvatar, and in that union she became bound by the chain and trammels of the flesh of Arda.

The Girdle of Melian I would safely assume to be more powerful, although they are altogether different in design and purpose.
Melian was a Maia, Galadriel was an Elf.
I recognise the fact that Melian was a powerful Maia (I dont think, though, that she was the "most powerful" one, because Sauron is held to be the most powerful one) and just because of it, she has an advantage in terms of ratial powers.

Therefore, her character in the beginning was quite romantic but later received the halo of might and lore in his scripts; she came to be a sorcerer, a prophet and lot-a queen.
Melian met Elwe Singollo in a way which seems to be Tolkien’s favourite motif- a maiden dances in the twilight of a wood, a youth spots her and they fall in love and stay still for a long, long time in the magic of their meeting.
Whatever, the answer is, the consequences of this union are quite curious- Melian becomes Queen of Doriath, assumes political power and takes part in the greatest events of The First Age, albeit Thingol’s narrow mindedness.

Being brilliant in mind and swift in action she had early absorbed all of what she was capable of the teaching which the Valar thought fit to give the Eldar.
