King of Scotland (1093-94), son of Malcolm III and grandson of Duncan I. For many years (1072?-87) Duncan lived as a hostage of the Norman English, allegedly as a confirmation of his father's homage to William I of England.
He at once designated himself "heir of the kingdom of Scotland," clearly anticipating the vindication of his claim, which was derived from his mother, daughter of Margaret, eldest daughter of David, earl of Huntingdon, brother to kings Malcolm IV and William I the Lion.

According to tradition, the state was created by Kenneth I of Scotland in 843, however modern historiography would tend to see his grandson Constantine II of Scotland as the creator of the kingdom of Alba which became Scotland.
From the reign of Macbeth of Scotland, Scottish monarchs most commonly employed the style King of Scots or Queen of Scots, with the exception of the final three: William III, Mary II and Anne used the style "of Scotland" rather than "of Scots" (see Style of the monarchs of Scotland).
Gaelic dominance of Scotland ended during the reign of King Alexander I of Scotland (1107-1124), and the old Celtic system of matrilineal kingship finally ended and was replaced by a system of primogeniture.

Eochaid of Scotland, also called Eochu or Eochaidh, was king of Scotland from 878 to 889.
Eochaid was not eligible to take the throne of Scotland using the normal tanistry system, because he was descended from the daughter of the royal line.
However once he had the throne, he found that he was stuck in a joint rulership over Scotland with Giric, and there is evidence to suggest that it wasn't a good relationship.

He and Eochaid did not, it would appear, get on well, and in 889 Giric died, in battle, fighting a distant cousin Donald, son of King Constantine I, who then exiled Eochaid and took the throne as Donald II
