When Girlfriends magazine first hit the stands in 1994, Ellen - the TV sitcom character and the actress who played her - was still hidden in the dark recesses of the proverbial closet.
Findlay also frames Girlfriends' relaunch in terms of the mainstreaming of lesbian culture embodied by the success of The L Word, observing that "there were no lesbians on TV" when she began publishing the magazine.
While the magazine long worked to reflect the diversity of the lesbian community on its pages - and sought to quell conflicting criticisms that the dykes gracing its pages are either too butch or too femme - the fashion spreads make the job that much harder.

In addition, the country's oldest lesbian magazine, On Our Backs, was founded in the early 1980s and continues to be published in San Francisco (now by the same company that publishes Girlfriends).
