Following the release of Girlschool's debut single, "Take It All Away/It Could Be Better" in the summer of 1979, Motörhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister got interested in the band and introduced them to his manager at the time, Doug Smith.
This album saw Girlschool moving in a more commercial direction, and although the "20th Century Boy/Breaking All The Rules" single failed to chart, the album did squeak in at No. 66, the last chart placing they would receive.
The release of two Live In Concert CD's demonstrates that Girlschool is indeed back in their true, kick-ass form, giving hard rock/metal fans a reason to kick themselves for not supporting a band that truely deserved it back in the 80's, a band whose influence was never properly acknowledged by critics and headbangers alike.

GIRLSCHOOL take their place in British Rock history by being, without doubt, the most successful all female Hard Rock band, a fact witnessed by the group being the constant yardstick to which all other girl bands have been measured up to.
GIRLSCHOOL, who doubled looks with aggression in a formula which pandered little to pop formulas, originally formed as a school band titled PAINTED LADY in 1977 by teenagers Kim McAuliffe, Enid Williams and guitarist Deirdre Cartwright and debuted at the Two Brewers pub in Clapham during 1977.
The change of name to GIRLSCHOOL was adopted when, after numerous line-up changes (including future GO-GOS member Kathy Valentine being in the band at one time), a stable unit was established.

Throughout the '90s, Girlschool would reunite sporadically for tours and albums (including 1992's self-titled release and 1995's Live), while several compilations were issued, including 1995's double-disc best-of set The Collection and 1997's The King Biscuit Flower Hour Presents In Concert (the latter featuring a show recorded on January 12, 1984, in Nashville, TN).

But despite what you might think of a band with girls playing their instruments, GIRLSCHOOL played with such an intensity and a knack for hooky, catchy songs that some of their male counterparts twisted in shame.
HIT AND RUN is GIRLSCHOOL at its most intense, heaviest and fastest, yet the songs were really memorable and had this had a more "subtle" production it would have been an international hit.

Girlschool have been around a fair while now and like Motorhead (with whom Girlschool are currently touring) they have stuck to their guns to avoid making music to please the mainstream.
On this evidence it would seem that Emergency is far more convincing than the majority of new punk and metal bands that would stipulate Girlschool and the like as their influences.
They may well be nearer to being in retirement homes than a girl's school these days, but this single (and its B-side; anthemic punk sing-along London) is shot through with a youthful exuberance that few half their ages could muster.

The story of GIRLSCHOOL began during 1977 in South London, where school chums Kim McAuliffe (vocals/guitar) and Enid Williams (bass) started an all-female band by the name of PAINTED LADY.
Within just a month of being together, the girls hit the road, sending hot rock gravel in all directions as they played a vast number of small venues in the UK and also on the continent.
But in 1992 the band reassembled for a surprisingly gritty album "Girlschool" and announced in 1993 that they would be touring with original guitarist Kelly Johnson and they kept their promise!

Let’s hope that we don’t need to wait another few years for the girls to return; it’s blatantly obvious that they have a huge following in North America and that was very evident at the LA gig by the turnout and the people’s reaction to the girls.
Their new one, Believe, is exceptional musicianship but yet still hits the old Girlschool groove; but again, I would expect nothing less from the ladies.

Though the Runaways are often considered one of the earliest all-female hard rock bands, Girlschool took matters to the next level, making it clear that they were no novelty act and that their music, not their image, was what mattered.
Moreover, Girlschool has always been about metal, not poppy hard rock (except for a brief mid-career spell).
Maintaining ties to Motorhead didn't hurt the band either, as the two collaborated on several projects together and toured together frequently in those days.
