In 1548 Girolamo dalla Casa, a cornett player at San Marco in Venice, published "Il vero modo di diminuir" ("The true way of division").
The analyses of the compositions including divisions by dalla Casa show that he often uses the first and second mode according to Ortiz, but that he does not use the third (except for the pieces for the viola bastarda).
Dalla Casa quite frequently takes the liberty not to respect this recommendation.

Girolamo della Casa, head of the wind band at St. Mark's, was famous as a cornetto virtuoso.
The famous cornettist Girolamo dalla Casa, from Udine, was first hired at St. Mark's on January 29, 1568 as the leader of a salaried three-person band that included his brothers.
Girolamo remained as leader of the instrumentalists until his death in 1601 when he was replaced by Giovanni Bassano, who had been a member of the windband as far back as the 1570s.

Girolamo Dalla Casa flourished in the second half of the 16th century, and in 1568 was responsible for forming the first permanent instrumental ensemble at San Marco in Venice.
Upon his death in 1601 Dalla Casa was suceeded as head of the instrumental ensemble at San Marco by his colleague Giovanni Bassano, who was mentioned in 1612 as leader of one a company of instrumentalists who were engaged to play during major festivities in Venice.
Frais et gaillart, his 1591 embellished version of the Clemens non Papa chanson, although contemporary with Dalla Casa, is quite different in the style of ornamentation.

HOASM: Monody and the Vocal Concerto
The new professional singer, being in direct contact with audiences, was sensitive to their eagerness to be moved by music they could understand and their admiration for brilliant technique and soaring, smooth vocalism.
Girolamo Dalla Casa and Emilio de' Cavalieri were singing masters, and Giulio Caccini, Francesco Rasi, and Jacopo Peri were very successful singers turned composers in order to create for themselves a repertory for the changing times, since the professional composers had defaulted.
Only after the new style became popular did men who were primarily composers, such as Sigismondo d'India and Monteverdi, begin to imitate and refine it.

Could it not be possible that he met Girolamo dalla Casa, master serpent player, and his brothers Giovanni and Nicolò, both excellent brass players, there?
Girolamo dalla Casa had been maestro de' concerti in San Marco since 1568 and like Bassano, he focused on the art of ornamentation.
This shared background gives additional base to the assumption that there would have been frequent meetings between Giovanni Bassano, Girolamo dalla Casa and dalla Casa's brothers.

The other composers represented often put into print their own views on instrumental divisions for example Ortiz, Girolamo dalla Casa and Bassano.
Their approach was to have copied examples of their own work for performers to play through.
An example of this is track 12 - Bassano’s ‘Susanne ung jour’ and track 16 Dalla Casa’s ‘Vestiva I colli’.

It was prized for the resemblance of its sound to that of the human voice, considered to be the perfect instrument, and for its suitability for performing elaborate musical ornamentation.
Always considered a difficult instrument, it spawned a select group of highly regarded, and highly paid, virtuoso players such as Giovanni Bassano and Girolamo Dalla Casa, both of whom worked at the Basilica di San Marco in Venice.
The repertoire for the instrument covers the Renaissance and early Baroque periods.

 Harmonia Caelestis - Programme
The raison d’être of this CD lies in the overlap of repertory for the cornett and the violin (occasioned by their frequent interchangeability), and in the marriage of both instruments.
Of the two, the cornett’s particular appeal, according to Girolamo Dalla Casa (1584), lies in its tonal similarity to the human voice, an attribute poetically likened by Marin Mersenne (1636) to ‘a brilliant ray of sunshine piercing the shadows’.
As such it was an instrument particularly suited (often in tandem with sackbuts) to supporting a choir.

Then comes the Italian edition of Ortiz (1553), without any of the translations and commentary that aids the reader in the recent Bärenreiter version, but in facsimile throughout; while primarily for viol, it anticipates the later, all-purpose manuals by giving a host of cadential formulae and examples of embellishment.
Girolamo dalla Casa’s Il vero modo di dimunir (1584) is directed to ‘tutte le sorti di stromenti: di fiato, and corda, and di voce humana’.
This is far more systematic than Ortiz, with hundreds of ways of getting form A to B or G to A and embellished parts for many favourite chansons and madrigals, ten settings for viola bastarda, and ending with all four parts, fully underlaid, of a six-section piece by Rore.
