Structure: The Girth Hitch is much more familiar than many of us recognize: it is the same knot we use to link a pair of elastic bands.
Uses: The Girth Hitch attaches a sling or a webbing strap loop to your harness or to another sling, strap, or rope.
It is also often employed when slings are used to connect anchor points to a static rope in a top-rope set-up.

The girth hitch can reduce the strength of your runner combination to 66% of the strength of a runner/biner/runner combination.
Toss in a spectra/nylon runner combination and you're potentially working with a setup that will fail at 10kN or less.
Otherwise, a girth hitch should be just fine if the girthed runners are strong enough.

Rock Climbing Forums: Climbing Information: General: Girth hitching a Cam??
The other issue with girth slinging onto a cam will be that you may still see a high transfer of movement from the rope to the cam.
A girth hitched sewn sling is about as strong as a knotted sling of the same material.
If you girth hitch the cam instead of the sling, I would think it would be stonger due to the force being nylon on aluminum instead of nylon on nylon.

However, I was thinking this morning: Why not use a girth hitch around a pair of caribiners at the point where the three loops come together for the primary tie-in point.
Instead of tying off with a figure-8 and clipping in a pair of biners, girth hitch the same pair of biners with the three strands of cordelette as if it were one strand.
But that is not redundant unless you girth hitch the three anchor points, and if you are going to do that every time, it would be faster to just use a cordelette with a figure eight.

 Treatment for Girth Galls

Girth galls -- open sores that form just behind a horse's elbow -- may look like minor wounds, but they can be enormously painful to a saddled horse.
A protective fleece girth cover may work well as a preventive strategy, but it has to be cleaned often to maintain its cushioning properties.

 Cinching the Girth
The most common mistake with girthing this saddle is with using the English billet strap method, which is simply to put the buckle into a hole of the cinch strap.
However, the buckle on the girth needs to be used to complete the cinching rather than finishing with a knot at the upper D ring.
If you are using the girth that came with your saddle (sorry, no picture) you will see a three inch wide open ended pocket on one end of the girth.

 Girth Galls
Girth Galls are sores which develop due to friction between the girth, or harness and the horse or pony.
Girth galls can develop when a horse has particularly soft skin or can develop due to a dirty or hard girth being used or the girth has been placed on a dirty horse.
Girth Galls should be treated as a minor wound and once healed the skin can be hardened by dissolving 2 heaped teaspoonfuls of salt in a pint of warm water and applying this to the skin.

 Girths & Girthing Systems
The forward buckle of the girth engages the strap that is attached to the saddle.
The strap that is attached to the girth goes up through the ring of the surcingle (the wide strap going over the the top of the saddle), and then goes back to the rear buckle.
Now place the ring of the girth over the lip of the tackaberry buckle, and pull until the girth is at the desired tightness.

He associates the tightening of the girth with an activity that causes him pain, and because he cannot verbally tell you, he communicates in the next most efficient means for him.
But the tightening of the horse's girth is a necessity that allows us to ride, and ensuring that the girth is sufficiently snug, without pinching, is an important safety precaution.
While your horse is standing during the tacking-up process, the girth should be attached at least tightly enough to hold the saddle in place if the horse should shy or bolt.

Jessica Jahiel's HORSE-SENSE: Dressage girth questions
Warning: this is a useful formula IF your long girth fits well - that is, from the middle holes of the saddle billets on one side of the horse to the middle holes of the billets on the other side.
If your long girth was just barely long enough to fasten to the last holes in the billets, it was clearly too short, so instead of subtracting 20" from 52", you'll want to measure for a well-fitting long girth, and then subtract 20" from THAT measurement, whether it is 54" or 56" or longer.
The idea behind long billets and short girths is that the rider will be more comfortable and achieve closer contact with the horse, because if there is no girth under the saddle flaps, there won't be any "lump" of buckle and strap underneath the rider's leg.

Equusite.com - Don't Squeeze the Best Out of Your Horse! A study linking girth tightness with performance.
The effects of a tight girth on the performance of the horse has not previously been studied but some horse trainers have suggested that a very tight girth reduces the performance of horses.
The current study found that the run-to-fatigue times and distances were reduced with increased tension of the girth suggesting that overtightening the girth does cause a reduction in the performance of the horse.
The reason that overtightening of the girth causes poor performance is not yet known and there was some variability in the susceptibility of horses to overtightening of the girth and although most horses were affected to some degree, one horse was not affected.
