Girton College was established on October 16, 1869 by Emily Davies and Barbara Bodichon, as the first residential College for women in England.
On April 27, 1948, women were admitted to full membership of the University of Cambridge, and Girton College received the status of a College of the University.
The college became mixed in 1977 with the arrival of the first male Fellows; male undergraduates have been admitted since 1979.

Newnham College is a women's college in the University of Cambridge.
By 1881, women were allowed to sit university examinations, and in 1921 were awarded "titles" as a result, although they would have to wait until 1947 before they were awarded degrees, and 1958 before they achieved equal rights to their male counterparts.
In 1928, Newnham, along with Girton College was one of the venues for a series of lectures by Virginia Woolf that resulted in the famous book-length essay A Room of One's Own.

The political organisation of a College varies from institution to institution, but it is usually the case that the ultimate governing body is a small subset of the Fellows, but that decisions are approved by the Fellowship as a whole with representation from Middle and Junior members.
Some Colleges are known to take particular pride in the abilities of it's rowing teams (whether this is regarded as a good or a bad thing depends on personal prejudice!) The University has a well known Cricket Ground (Fenners), it also has a rugby ground and (recently built) athletics facilities.
Some of the Colleges still take a large proportion of their undergraduate intake from the older public schools, some make a point of ensuring that state schools are well represented.

She was dux, in turn, of Otepopo School and the Normal School, Dunedin, and in 1886 was a foundation pupil of Girton College, which had been established by Caroline Freeman, the first woman student from the University of Otago to graduate.
Girton College, unlike many other girls' schools, encouraged its pupils to pursue academic studies, and Frances Ross went on to Otago, graduating BA in 1890.
In 1911 Freeman moved to Christchurch, where a second Girton College was operating, and Frances Ross became sole principal and owner of Dunedin's Girton College, a position she held until the school closed in late 1914.
