Gisela Richter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gisela Marie Augusta Richter (August 14, 1882 – December 24, 1972), was a classical archaeologist and art historian.
As author of numerous popular books on classical art, she was enormously influential on the general public's understanding and appreciation of the subject.
Writing 30 years after Richter's death, Camille Paglia paid tribute to her "for her clarity and rigor of mind; her fineness of sensibility and connoisseurship; her attention to detail and her power of observation and deduction; her mastery of form and design."

Richter's attempt to complete the Malevich animation film is among the topics discussed.
Series comprises Richter's filmscript and storyboards, Arnold Eagle's autograph notes, photographs, color slides, 16mm color film and audio tracks documenting their joint production of the Malevich animation film between 1970-1971, as well as the sudden termination of this project and Eagle's attempt to complete it after Richter's death.
Animation corresponds to the following segments of Richter's typescript and storyboards: 3-4, 8, 15, 31, 30, 33-34, 106, 5, 109-117, 113, 32, 18, 118, 36, 27, 104, 106, 37-41, 46-47, 65-67, 48, 53-64, 51-52, 59, 55-57, 48, 61-62, 51-52, 61, 63, 62, 45, 38, 63, 41, 48, 40, 39, 47, 38-39, 67-75, 78-85, 119-121.

Table of Contents and Excerpt, Stieber, The Poetics of Appearance in the Attic Korai
That Richter's groupings of the korai as well as the methodological principles on which they are based have emerged substantially intact after more than three decades suggests that her chronology as well as its premise is sensible and therefore likely to be correct.
As a sign of the resilience of Richter's methodologies, and serving as well as a tribute to her work, Claude Rolley, in a major recent French-language survey of Archaic and Early Classical art, devotes a portion of a chapter to a critique of Richter's approach.
However, a less fortunate result of Richter's hold on the scholarly literature has been that all of the korai, regardless of quality, are first and foremost thought of as examples of a fixed, predetermined type; in other words, what unites them is privileged over what differentiates them.

 Classical Greek Art Portraiture
Many portraits were done of great men of the past, and these were also idealized because the artists did not truly know what they looked like, there merely tried to portray the personalities of those men (Boardman, 136).
To get the full idea of a portrait the whole body of the sculpture must be looked at, as the artist took great care to represent personality in all of the body.

Moreover, Richter had catalogued the korai in chronological clusters, regardless of origin, whereas K. has adopted a regional analysis that usefully groups the korai by provenience and/or by sanctuary.
Richter's catalogue comprises 206 items, but of these only 114 are stone korai (some of them architectural, and some deities); the remaining 92 entries deal with figurines in bronze, wood, ivory, and terracotta.
On the other hand, at least five true korai discussed by Richter are not included by K. Some discrepancy may occur also in attributing fragments to complete statues; e.g., K. accepts that a head in Copenhagen belongs to a body in Istanbul, from Lindos (p.

Rather, she argues that the mimetic realism of the sculptures reflects a concern for individualization; hence the korai must represent real women, as opposed to generic, idealizing figures, heroic or mythological characters, or divinities.
In many ways, S.'s study, which is derived from her doctoral dissertation, represents a kind of continuity with the fundamental monograph by Gisela Richter in terms of its analytical approach and basic assumptions.
But whereas Richter interpreted differences in the rendering of such features as indicators of regional and personal sculptural styles, S. identifies them as reflecting a desire on the part of the sculptor to render the actual physical appearance of the "sitter." Whether the same can be argued for the kouroi is not addressed.

Gisela Richter's valuable and important work still dominates the study of the archaic kouros, which she described as a 'laboratory' of Greek sculpture.
Constructing her chronological type-series, Richter drew upon a number of miniature kouroi in limestone and so-called alabaster.
In Richter's 'laboratory', these were discussed in isolation from their archaeological contexts and their strong Cypriot connections ignored.
